Technology Improves Farming How John Deere and Cyrus McCormick Influence Farming in the Early 1800s by Janielle Calaunan & Otis Neavins

Farming Before Deere and McCormick ●™Iron Plows – Designed for the light, sandy soils of New England ○Heavy soils of the Midwest clung to these plows These plows slowed farmers down Many farmers were discouraged and were considering to move back east. The amount of grains cut by hand during the short harvest season shorten the food supply and farm sizes.

John Deere Moved to Illinois due to business depression in Vermont 1836-Invented lightweight plow with steel cutting edge. o Made preparing ground less work. The steel-plow gave stunning growth on his business. o He took and sold his plow to the country 1852-Set up a company called “Deere and Co.”

Cyrus McCormick Patented mechanical reaper and the threshing machine. ●1834-Mechanical Reaper ○Cuts ripe grain ●Threshing Machine ○Separated kernels of wheat from husks ●Devoted his life on working ○His final words were “work, work, work”

How Their Tools Influenced Farming Due to Deere’s plow, more farmers began moving John Deere’s invention turned the midwestern mud into the nation's breadbasket. More textile mills, more cotton on demand to the Midwest. This led to the expansion of Southern slavery

Unity Due To Farming The new technologies linked regions The new technology made more farmers move to the midwest. Midwestern farmers feed to the Northeastern factory workers In return, the Midwestern farmers sell manufactured goods of the Northeastern
