Reasons for Colonizing Nigeria n develop trade among the societies n gain natural resources –ex. oil and metal n spread religious beliefs –mostly Christianity n “civilize” the Nigerian natives

The Start of Colonization n the British sent their military for expansion of the territory n a charter gave northern Nigeria to the British n the British claimed Nigeria in several stages n Nigeria was under the rule of the British towards the end of the 19th century

Major Tribes Affected n Borno- northeastern tribe n Benin- southern tribe n Oyo- southwestern tribe n Ibo- eastern tribe... and many more

Changes During Colonialism n introduction to Christianity n church missionaries established schools –reading the Bible was part of the schooling n English became the main language n code of conduct was created for the Nigerian villages

Positive Affects on the Tribes n received knowledge and education of the world n gave natives the ability to practice other religions n society became more modern n introduced a federal system of government

Negative Affects on the Tribes n Nigerians lost their land and independence n European diseases made Nigerians ill and die n clans were pitted against one another n Nigerian way of life was taken away

Positive Effects of Colonialism n established a democracy –civil liberties are protected n a wealthy economy is developed in southern Nigeria –the discovery of oil now controls the economy

Negative Effects of Colonialism n violence erupts –differences of ethnic groups –oil discovery n ethnic groups struggle for representation in the government n uneven wealth distribution causes poverty in parts of Nigeria

Recovery from Colonialism n some traditional languages are still spoken n houses in rural areas remain non-urban n traditional foods are integrated into meals –ex. yams and sweet potatoes n oil runs the economy

Recovery from Colonialism (continued) n property rights are handled by traditional beliefs n social class is based on the titles someone has n there different roles between men and women n some ways of Nigerian life are incorporated into the urban influence
