Presentation transcript:

Victory Elementary Presents: SOL Parent Information Night

 The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) test is administered to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in the spring during May and June.  The testing window for this year is: 5/12-6/6/2014.  Results are not available until the end of the school year. Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL)

 Third grade students take four tests: Reading Math History Science 3 rd Grade SOLs

 Fourth grade students take three tests: Reading Math Virginia History  4 th graders do NOT take a Science SOL, however 4 th grade science content is included on the 5 th grade Science SOL. 4 th Grade SOLs

 Fifth grade students take four tests: Reading Math Science Writing (given in March) 5 th Grade SOLs

 The tests are taken online. Students are familiar with this format as they do online testing all year.  Many questions are multiple-choice format.  There are also four types of technology-enhanced items: drag and drop, hot spot (which includes number lines and coordinate plane items), bar graph or histogram, and fill-in-the-blank. What is the format of the tests?

 SOL’s are not timed. Students may have as long as they need to complete the test.  Most students are able to finish within the normal school day. Occasionally, students have required additional time. If this situation was to occur, parents are notified and arrangements are made so that the student can remain at school in order to complete the test. How long does my child have to take the test?

Tips for Parents…  Make sure your child does the homework and assignments that will help him/her prepare for the test.  Refer to the resources posted on grade level and class websites.  Take advantage of the released SOL tests for your child’s grade level.  Encourage your child to do well but don’t pressure him/her. You may stress them out. Keep a positive attitude about SOL tests.

Tips for Parents…  Mark down SOL testing dates on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates. The dates will be posted on the school’s website as well as other reminders that the teacher will send to you.  Avoid testing dates for doctor’s appointments and family trips. Ensure that your child is present during testing.

Tips for Parents… (Night Before/Day of SOL)  Let your child relax for a few hours before bedtime; it can be stressful for them to study late into the night.  Make sure your child gets enough sleep on the night before a test.  Ensure that they wake up on time. Rushing to get ready may create unnecessary anxiety for your child.

Tips for Parents… (Night Before/Day of SOL)  Provide a healthy breakfast.  If your child takes a daily medication, please make sure that they take it on the day of the test.  If they wear glasses, please make sure that they have them.  Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time.
