2 1 -Welcome SOL Parent Night

3 2 SOL Testing The state of Virginia sets rigorous academic standards, known as the Standards of Learning (SOL), and measures achievement through annual SOL tests. The system provides schools, school divisions and the Virginia Department of Education with critical data to inform the development and implementation of effective instructional strategies and best practices. SOL assessments measure student achievement in English, mathematics, science and history/social science.

4 3 SOL Tests 3 rd Grade- Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science (covers curriculum from K-3) 4 th Grade- Reading, Math and VA History 5 th Grade- Reading, Writing, Math and Science (the science test covers 4 th and 5 th grade objectives)

11 10 FOCUS F= Face It Face the fact that this is important. Face the teacher for directions. Face the test.

12 11 O= Organize It Organize the things around me. Organize my body position. Organize my answers. Organize my thoughts. Organize my speed.

13 12 C= Conquer It Conquer any nervousness. Conquer negative thoughts. Calm down and breathe deeply. Use brain power to study and BEAT the test!

14 13 U= Understand It Underline it. Hear every word in my mind. Underline key words and think through each question.

15 14 S= Scan It Scan the entire test. Double check my work and the answer sheet to make sure my answers match the test questions.

16 15 Tips for Parents Assist with homework and reading assignments. Avoid cramming information the night before the test. Keep cool. Encourage your child to do well.

17 16 Tips for Parents Write down test dates. Be sure to get enough sleep. Encourage your child to eat breakfast. Be sure that your child is on time. Praise and reward your child when they do well.
