2.  Grades 3 – 5  Administered at the end of grade (EOG) in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies  Test dates – Monday – Friday  April 13 – 17, 2015 2

Unique Features  –Inclusion of constructed-response items in ELA and mathematics, in addition to selected- response items  –Inclusion of a writing component (in response to text) at every grade level within the ELA assessment;  –Inclusion of norm-referenced items in every grade and content area  –Transition to online administration over time, with online administration considered the primary mode of administration  Addition of technology-enhanced items beginning in 2016-2017. 3

Transition to online administration starts this school year with our fourth grade students.  Online administration will be the primary mode of administration for Georgia Milestones for all grades.  Year 1: Minimum of 30% online: 2014-2015  Year 3: Minimum of 80% online  Year 5: Minimum of 100% online 4

5. Things to note…  This year’s test results will be delayed until fall of 2015 due to standard setting.  The State Board has waived through July 2015  160-4-2-.11 Promotion, Placement and Retention sections (3)(a), (3) (b), (3) (c)  160-4-2-.13 Statewide passing score sections (2)(d), (2) (e), (2)(f)  Houston County Board of Edu. will make determination of promotion/retention policy. 5

6. Question Types  Selected-Response (aka, multiple-choice)  All content areas  Constructed – Response  ELA and mathematics  Extended-Constructed Response  ELA and mathematics 6

7.  Constructed response is a general term for assessment items that require the student to generate a response as opposed to selecting a response.  Extended-constructed response items require more elaborate answers and explanations of reasoning. They allow for multiple correct answers and/or varying methods of arriving at the correct answer. Writing prompts or performance tasks are examples of extended-response items. 7

8. Extended-writing response - Students write an opinion piece or develop and an informative/explanatory response  ELA Section 3:  Students read a pair of passages  3 selected response items –  1 question about each passage and then  1 question that relates to both passages (.e. compare/contrast) 1 constructed response item – linking the 2 passages  1 Extended-writing response – students must develop a writing piece drawing from the reading passages and cite evidence to support their conclusions, claims, etc.  *** 7 points for the extended-writing. 12. Math Example of a 4 th grade math constructed response The workers at a factory need to make 3,000 kites. They make 246 kites an hour and work for 8 hours a day. Use rounding to estimate the number of kites the workers still need to make the first day. Explain your work and write your answer on the line. ______ kites 12

13. Exemplar response….  246 rounds to 250 as the nearest ten.  There are four 250’s to make 1,000.  8 = 2 x 4 (4 = ½ day work times 2 (full day work)  So, 8 250’s make 2,000  3,000 – 2,000 = 1,000 OR  246 rounds down to 200.  200 x 8 = 1,600  3,000 – 1,600 = 1,400 13

16. General Test Parameters  ELA – 3 sections, 1 of which will focus mainly on writing  Math, Science and Social Studies will consist of 2 sections  Each section will be approximately 70 minutes 16

17. Milestones scores... Selected response (a.k.a. multiple choice) will be machine scored.  ELA and Math also have constructed response & extended constructed response.  Constructed response will use a rubric and be hand scored.  ELA's extended-writing response will require a rubric and hand scoring. 17

20. Parental tips that will make a difference...  Make your child go to bed at a reasonable time.  Make sure he/she eats a good breakfast! (Breakfast will be served at school)  Have a great morning at home before school!  Tell your child that YOU are confident that he or she will do well!  Make sure your child is present and on time!  Don't schedule any appointments during the week of the test! 20
