Presentation title: 32pt Arial Regular, black Recommended maximum length: 1 line National Knowledge Service of current & planned work by the NKS Institute Team Management Team Ian McKinnell Head of Development Angie Clarke Head of Service Graham Bayliss Programme Lead September 2007 Update Encl 2

NLH Blueprint To become the knowledge resource of first choice by NHS staff NLH content to be ubiquitous NLH to be a user driven, personalised service, To deliver an innovative, skilled and technology enabled library service to NHS users To enable safer, better healthcare via the development of knowledge-based health service To drive up the quality of knowledge provided through the NLH services

The Service Offer for NHS Workforce Search and find Predictable, often immediate delivery Web enabled service Integrated with intermediate services Links to value added services Personalised, localised services

Programmes and Outcomes The NLH workstreams are grouped into 10 programmes, each with its own delivery lead and team: –Discovery to Delivery (D2D) –Partners Programme –Service Modernisation –Specialist Libraries –User Engagement –Content Development –My Library –Library Staff Development –Enterprise Architecture –Service Management

Enterprise Architecture Highlight A ubiquitous NLH: NLH is not just a website - NLH knowledge is widely accessible via diverse portals and clinical applications What we are delivering: A true Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) A single comprehensive Interface which any client application can consume. This will be used by the Map of Medicine, by the NHS Microsoft Office Products and by GP systems of Choice suppliers Increased scalability and performance Single Knowledge sign-on across all knowledge products Opportunities for working with you -Improved Access to the Knowledge Base e.g. MoM Microsoft and GP systems of Choice. Working with the service to improve and promote these features is key to their successful implementation Programme Lead: Kailash Sohoni

Discovery to Delivery (D2D) Highlight: Knowledge is more findable, and there is an easier, seamless user journey from discovery to delivery of documents, NLH brings together disparate collections into a common information architecture What we are delivering: Search 2.0 – Single Search Replacement A re-design of the Information Architecture for NLH around a series of themed Hub Pages and searches; Integration of current clinical database, eBooks and Journals portals into a Books and Journals Hub; Development of new evidence based medicine search services within the Evidence Hub Establish an openURL compliant link resolver service as a stand-alone service for integration NLH search and NLH partner services; Complete a Document Delivery Business plan and establish a sustainable funding model for a future service Opportunities for working with you We need your help to test and improve as the knowledge hubwww.library.nhs.uk Programme Lead: Christine Rimmer

My Library Highlight NLH Users are able to personalise their knowledge resources and share those with other users : Local services can use personalisation to extend their reach through the web What we are delivering: –A channels architecture will allow discovery and tailoring of a personal current awareness through an aggregator – My Update – and enable NLH to deliver channels for consumption by other sites or, for example, push services as part of registration. Channels will allow users to share feeds and links and tagged resources with other NLH users –Current Awareness and alerts services will be developed with networks of librarians to link NHS clinicians and managers to services provided by their local librarians. –The Specialist Library Programme will contribute Current Awareness RSS feeds and create Channel templates for their speciality, targeted at specific audiences such as students or primary care staff. –Links to local (or favourite) library services – ask-a-librarian Opportunities for working with you We want to run two pilots to test personalised Knowledge resources to meet individual needs. London and Yorkshire and the Humber are the two proposed test sites Programme Lead: Steve Ashwell

Service Modernisation Highlight: To draft and trial an NSF for Libraries and Knowledge Services by Oct 1997 By trialling a National Service Framework that will ensure that there are understandable, measurable and realistic performance measures for knowledge services across all Trusts and Organisations in the NHS. The NLH Institute team is a pilot site so that we understand our own position in relation to the standards. The outcome will inform us where we need to develop and improve and to demonstrate that we can practice what we preach – so far the results are encouraging and seem to indicate the NSF is workable and the NHSIII is reaching an acceptable level of performance against measurements Opportunities for Working with you:  The NSF will be useful to NHS Trusts who are seeking to measure themselves against National Standards. Your testing feedback and commentary is crucial Programme Lead: Colin Davies

Specialist Libraries Highlight:To Undertake a Review of Specialist Libraries to Deliver an improvement in terms of infrastructure and technology, and in terms of their relevance to the communities they are designed to serve. Review and Re-commissioning of Specialist Libraries –review the rationale for Specialist Libraries –undertake customer engagement work –Define the output-based specification ready for tendering –Commission new Specialist Libraries Opportunities for working with you: Knowledge retrieved by the Specialist Libraries can be used to improve the quality of decision making. We are already collecting feedback on the review and will continue to work with the service to improve the offer Programme Lead: Fran Wilkie

Library Staff Development Highlight: To support the continuing development of health care library staff by delivering specific training programmes and the appointment of a fellowship for the Health Library community. We have delivered –Copyright in the NHS (July 2007) –Strategic planning residential for NLH Co-ordination group (July 2007) We are working on –Exploring the roll out of key local staff development initiatives, including the use of eLearning –Leadership development for Knowledge Leads across the SHAs –Paraprofessional development Opportunities for working with you: One of the key outcomes of this programme is to encourage partnership working and to develop the strategic planning skills of the health care knowledge service leads. Programme Lead: Anne Weist

Content Development Highlight: To develop more compelling Content and Services We are working on: Core Content Collections The development of an eLearning repository to house eLearning objects both for the Institute and for the NHS The development of eLearning objects to support knowledge management and access skills for the NHS Opportunities for working with you: Core content collaborative work across the ten SHAS is designed to ensure best value. Additionally the eLearning initiative aims to enable better storage, access and sharing of eLearning objects for the wider benefit of the service. Programme Lead: Claire Honeybourne/Angie Clarke

Service Management Highlight: Introduction of a central service desk to formalise and manage user queries by December Exploration of income generation from one of our Key products Clinical Knowledge Summaries to be undertaken before the end of the financial year We are working on Helpdesk A business plan has been developed for the helpdesk An OBS is ready to be issued for the helpdesk A tender for the work on the helpdesk nearly ready to issue Clinical Knowledge Summaries Contract management is ongoing Next years programme is being explored Opportunities for working with you: The helpdesk will provide an improved means of communication between initially the NLH and the wider Service. We have been told by the service this will be welcomed we are going to work with a focus group to ensure smooth implementation. Programme Lead : Ingrid Evans

User Engagement Highlight:To increase use of NLH Digital and Physical library services We are working on –Piloting a network of volunteers to act as ‘mystery shoppers’ –Undertaking focus groups covering – news alerts/current awareness, question-answer services, NLH website and Specialist Libraries –Using social network software to encourage generic and targeted discussions on content and services Opportunities for working with you: We would like to work with volunteers more closely on engaging users from the service and make better use of the Institute Practice Partner network. Programme Lead: Colin Davies

Reflection on our first few months We are very glad to be here! We have been made very welcome! We know we need to do more to raise awareness of NLH services within the wider Service and would like your help to do that, your role as our partners and Champions would be invaluable. We know some of our projects are relevant to other parts of the wider health service and we want to develop collaboration and co-development programmes so intelligence on possible opportunities in this direction would be great. We are developing many exciting and innovative products to help the development of knowledge based decision making in the service and we need to make sure as many people as possible can access and use them so any ideas you can feed back to us in this respect would be very helpful. Finally we would also value highly any commentary you could feed back to us on the use, or not, as the case may be, of the NLH in general.
