IBEAR Decision making scenarios By: Ryan Johnston

#1 Scenario You and a friend have just watched a movie. You are leaving the cinema and notice a group of popular kids from your school who are all smoking. You stop to talk. You and your friend are offered cigarettes 1. Identify the problem I have just been offered a cigarette 2. Brainstorm the alternatives - I could take the cigarette and smoke - I could not take the cigarette - I could just leave the cinema

Positives and Negatives If I leave than cool kids may think I am scared of smoking. If I leave they may also respect me. If I leave than I will keep my self respect. I could smoke and lose myself respect, possibly get addicted to cigarettes. I could stay and not smoke. Keep myself respect but also stay talking with the cool kids. Thy could possibly respect me or they could taunt me for not smoking 3. Evaluate the alternatives an pick. I am a young kid. I don’t want to upset my parents. I don’t want to get addicted to cigarettes. I will leave the cinema. I could possibly be taunted for not smoking, I could lose friends. I keep my parents trust and hopefully keep friends

4. Act on Decision I could possibly lose a lot of friends because of the cool kids possibly taunting me. 5. Re-evaluate solution I think I made the correct choice because smoking can lead to many diseases. I kept myself respect, also my parents found out what I did and also respected me for my decision. My parents trust me more after this decision. My friend also confirms my story that I didn’t smoke.

#2 Scenario You and your best friend have been talking more and more about weight. You are at her house looking through magazines. She turns to a picture of a thin, beautiful model advertising ultra-thin cigarettes. You tell your friend that it would be great to look like the model. Your best friend opens a cupboard and takes out a package of her mom's cigarettes. She offers one to you. 1. Identify the Problem She has just offered me a cigarette 2. Brainstorm other alternatives -Leave her house -Smoke cigarette -Stay at her house and don’t smoke cigarette

Positives and negatives If I leave her home I could lose my friend. If I Smoke than I keep friend but lose myself respect. If I stay and don’t smoke I could keep friend and also keep myself respect. I could also talk my friend out of smoking if I stay and don’t smoke. 3. Evaluate the alternative and choose one I am young kid who doesn’t want to get addicted to cigarettes. I don’t want my parents to get upset. I leave house so that I am not around second hand smoke. I could lose my friend but keep the trust between me and my parents 4. Act on decision I lose friend but keep my life and honesty 5. Re-evaluate solution I think I made the correct decision because if I get addicted to smoking it can lead to many diseases. I could have done it but I would have broken the trust between me and my parents. My friend admits to smoking and tells my parents that I didn’t. My parents trust me more.

#3 Scenario You and your friends are having fun playing basketball. Another friend arrives a little later and starts talking to two of the other friends. The three of them motion to the rest of the group to join them off to the side. They light a marijuana cigarette and pass it around. The cigarette comes to you. 1. Identify the problem I have been offered a marijuana cigarette 2. Brainstorm the alternatives - Leave - Smoke the cigarette - Stay and don’t smoke

Positives and Negatives If I leave then I may lose friends but I keep my self respect and also keep the trust between me and my parents. I if stay and smoke than I lose the trust with my parents and I could get addicted and possibly get diseases. 3. Evaluate the alternatives If I stay then I can possibly smoke and get hooked on the drug but if I leave than I could lose friends that would no longer respect me. 4. Act on Decision I lose friends but could gain respect for myself keep my parents trust 5. Re-evaluate Solution I definitely choose the right decision because smoking has many risks and dangers. I could have smoked but I would be nervous around my parents for lying. Police caught the kids that were smoking and my parents new I was there but I told them that I left when kids started to smoke. My parents trust me more.

#4 Scenario Two of your friends tell you that they smoke because it helps reduce their appetite. You aren't sure if this is true at all, because you have heard some people say that smoking has no effect on weight. You feel you could lose a few extra pounds and with graduation coming up in a few months, you wouldn't mind looking slimmer. 1. Identify the problem I am considering smoking 2. Brainstorm the alternatives - Smoke - Don’t smoke 3. Evaluate the Alternatives If I smoke to try to get thinner then after a while I will get so thin that I get diseases. I also do not want to get hooked on smoking. I do not want to lose friends but I don’t want to go against my parents trust. So I choose not smoking.

4. Act of decision I could lose friends but I also keep the weight on that I wanted to shed. 5. Re-evaluate Solution I think I chose the right solution because my friends that started smoking before graduation are still smoking and are looking very unhealthy. I am happy that chose not to smoke.

#5 Scenario You and a friend are at a party. Before the party, your friend arranges with her parents to get a ride home for you both at the end of the evening. When it is time to leave, her/his brother and a friend arrive to pick you up instead of his/her parents. You notice that both boys have been drinking and there is even an open bottle of beer in the car. It isn't very far to your house though. 1. Identify the problem Brother of my friend has been drinking and is supposed to take me home 2. Brainstorm the alternatives - walk home - Go with him

Positives and Negatives If I do go home with him then I am putting my life at risk. If I walk than it will take longer to get home. 3. Evaluate the alternatives If I let the brother drive me home than everyone in the car is in danger as well as others on the road. He is drunk and is not in the proper condition to drive. If I walk than it will take longer but I will be safe. I chose to talk my friend’s brother out of driving and me and my friend walk home together, then everyone stays safe. 4. Act on decision I think that this decision is perfect because there are no consequences on the good choice. 5. Re-evaluate Solution I definitely chose the right decision because everyone arrived home safely and later that night I heard that a child and his brother were killed by a drunk driver hitting there car.
