Challenges facing SHS : High Mobility Rate – 17.6% at SHS compared to 11.8% across the State. Students will come and go at a variety of different times, not always at natural breaks. Increasing population of students with behavioral mental health issues. Substance Abuse - 10 Incidents – Marijuana – 8 Expulsions – 2 L.T.S. 7 Incidents – Inhalants – 3 Expulsions – 4 L.T.S.
Developing and Implementing a 9 th Grade Transition Program Double-Dosing Math – (Algebra Everyday) – Algebra I curriculum plus enrichment including problem-solving and experience with authentic practical application. This will allow students to have a greater chance of succeeding and maintaining grade level standards or above. Our chances are much greater of seeing our students graduate if they are successful in their first 2 years of high school. Our students will also have many choices and opportunities as Juniors and Seniors through career pathways, AP, and dual credit courses that will be available.
Developing and Implementing a 9 th Grade Transition Program High School Success Course ( This course will help students improve their social, emotional, and academic skills and strengthen their relationships among students and teachers. A career component will also be included including: Career Assessment – Students following their passion Counselors working closely with teachers to bring in guest speakers and have industry tours. Introduction to CTE Courses – Teachers will teach a 2-3 week rotation to introduce students to their programs.
Other components that will be focused upon: Provide all students with the skills that will allow them to be successful and college and career ready through the components of this program - 9 th Grade – HS Success Course, Introduction to CTE Courses 10 th Grade – Softskills curriculum recognized and/or developed by local businesses – Certification 11 th and 12 th Grade - Increased pathways – Health Sciences, Focus on STEM, Introductory Education courses, options for college courses, dual credit, internships and industry certifications.
