2 Our Goal for Students at MHS Mission Statement Melrose High School is committed to developing academic and personal excellence. In partnership with home and community, we foster a safe and caring learning environment. We encourage a passion for learning by providing an engaging curriculum with high expectations for all students. We prepare our graduates to become knowledgeable, respectful, contributing citizens of a global society. All Melrose High School Students will be exposed to a comprehensive curriculum that will prepare them for a successful college and career experience. We are a competitive and adaptive high school with high expectations for all students.

7 New Elective Courses at MHS for 2014-2015 Continued  Algebra Lab  Geometry Lab  Literature, Film, &Visual Rhetoric  Intro to Sports Management  Concepts in Art  Student Technology Integration  Creative Nonfiction The Graphic Novel  Women in Literature  Writing for Newspapers and Periodicals  Peace and Protest: Literature and Composition from America’s Conflicts

8 New Electives  0.5 Elective Credit  Class can be scheduled….  Opposite another 0.5 Elective  Opposite Wellness or Skills classes  Classes meet every other day for full year  Developed by stakeholders  In certain cases co-developed by teachers in more than 1 Department New opportunities for our Students and Teachers!

9 Integration of Additional Pathways Fine Arts Classical Business  Melrose High School and District Leadership are introducing the concept of choosing a Pathway of Study open to all students.  The new Pathways are in addition to our current GEM and STEM Pathways which are certificate programs. (Upon completion of the program students will receive a certificate at graduation)

10 Pathways of Study Continued PATHWAYS OF STUDY Students have the opportunity to choose a pathway in Business, The Arts, and Classics. Students who complete the GEM and STEM pathway programs will receive a special certificate at graduation. The three new pathways are not currently certificate programs but will be in the future. The Pathways of Study are designed to expose students to a focused curriculum that will further prepare them for college and career. Pathways of Study include some scheduling options, a capstone project and in some cases internship opportunities.

12 Business Pathway Designed to support student exploration of business-related career fields.  Accounting 1  Business Management and Law  Personal Finance  Public Speaking  Microsoft office  Computer Science Choose 2 credits from the following:  Accounting  AP Economics  Economics  AP Statistics  Marketing*  Sports Management*  Student Technology* Integration *0.5 Credit

13 Classics Pathway Designed for students interested in History, Literature, and Language. English 1, English 2, English 3 (or AP equivalent), and English 4 (or AP equivalent) Students are expected to take at least 1 of the following: Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Advance Placement English Literature and Composition AP European History or World History 2 U.S. History 1 U.S. History 2 Students can choose either: 4 years of Latin (including AP Latin) and 2 years of an additional Modern Language or 4 years of a Modern Language (including an AP Modern Language) and 2 years of Latin

15 New Pathways  Open to all students in any grade to enter in the 2014-2015 school year  Still in development  Currently not a Certificate Program  There will be a Capstone Project upon Graduation  Will involve and enhance the Senior Internship Experience  Will increase number of students taking AP courses

16 Plans for Advanced Placement courses  Dr. Adams and Ms. Farrell are currently in the application process for the MMSI (Mass. Math & Science Initiative; through Mass Insight Education) Grant which will help MHS achieve the following goals….  Award students at graduation for taking multiple AP courses and scoring a 3 or higher on the AP exams  More students taking Advanced Placement classes and more students scoring 4s and 5s on the exams  More teachers trained to teach AP courses  Continuous support for our AP teachers throughout the year  Support for students taking AP courses, especially for the first time AP students  Increase exposure by doubling the amount of students who take college level courses over the next 2 years
