Day 4 “Circulatory System and Nervous System” Game Plan: Kick-Off= Muscle Review (use notes from page 6) 1.Circulatory System Notes 2.Diseases/issues of Circulatory System: heart attack, murmur, failure, CPR… 3.Nervous System Notes 4.Right Brain VS Left Brain 5.Mind over Matter Lab 6. Diseases of Nervous System: epilepsy, MS, ALS

Write in your AGENDA’s Next class will be a DISEASE AWARENESS project during class…. Homework : Bring in color pencils or markers next class! BYOD next class… Phones, I-Pads, Laptop… etc… you will need to have internet access

Circulatory System Key Points : Parts of blood Learn how the heart works Keeping your heart healthy Diseases of the heart

Heart FACT Your heart is really a muscle. It's located a little to the left of the middle of your chest, and it's about the size of your fist. Your heart is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to all organs of your body.

Heart Facts It beats 100,000 beats per day 2,000 gallons of oxygen rich blood through 60,000 miles of branching blood vessels

COMPONENTS OF BLOOD The components of blood can be divided into plasma and cells. When blood is placed in a container and spun at high speeds in a process called centrifugation, the heavier and denser cells settle at the bottom while the lighter plasma remains on top. s s

4 components found in blood… A. PLASMA B. WHITE BLOOD CELLS C. PLATELETS D. RED BLOOD CELLS

A. Plasma… 55% of blood is plasma Mainly water Food Chemicals Waste

B. White Blood Cells Defend the body from disease and bacteria FIGHTERS Eat bacteria before they can harm you

C. Plateletes Responsible for clotting (when you bleed) Create a thread net and RBC’s get caught in it to stop the bleeding

D. Red Blood Cells Pick up oxygen from the lungs and take it to the organs A single drop of blood has MILLIONS of RBCs

The Chambers of the heart Right Atrium Right Ventricle Left Atrium Left Ventricle

Your heart… the PUMP Your heart is sort of like a pump, or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite: It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body.

How can you keep your heart healthy? Remember that your heart is a muscle. If you want it to be strong, you need to exercise it. How do you do it? By being active in a way that gets you huffing and puffing, like jumping rope, dancing, or playing basketball. Try to be active every day for at least 30 minutes! An hour would be even better for your heart! Eat a variety of healthy foods and avoid foods high in unhealthy fats Try to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Don't smoke. It can damage the heart and blood vessels.

Issues and Diseases of the heart Murmur Atherosclerosis Heart Attack CPR… what does it do?

Heart Murmur

Atherosclerosis: build up of plaque on artery walls… leads to a heart attack.

Heart attack: part of heart tissue dies…

CPR: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Nervous System Key Points: 1. Neuron… or nerve cell… 2. Parts of the nervous system 3. Right Brain vs Left Brain self-test 4. Mind over matter lab 5. Problems of the nervous system

How does the nervous system work? The nervous system coordinates all of the activities in the body.

2 Main Divisions Central Nervous System or CNS: BRAIN and SPINAL CORD (THINK MOVEMENT, THINKING, ACTIONS) Peripheral Nervous System: gathers information from inside and outside the body. (THINK FEELING AIR, BALANCE, COLD/HOT) The CNS receives messages from the nerves in the PNS, interprets them, and sends out a response…

A NEURON or nerve cell Transmits messages to and from the spinal cord and brain. A NERVE is millions of neurons together..

How messages are sent through a neuron… HUMAN NEURON CHAIN ACTIVITY… Link hands… think of your fingers as dendrites, palm as cell body, arm as axon and myelin sheath! End person is the message… squeeze the next hand once yours is squeezed to send the message… Round 1= 1 squeeze Round 2= Lead Neuron decide how many squeezes… see if it is the same at the end!

Right Brain VS Left Brain

Right Brain or Left Brain Self-Test… 1. Read the background information on the front page 2. ON THE BACK… Every time you read a description or characteristic that applies to you, circle its number. There is no certain number of characteristics you must choose.

Using the KEY on the next slide Next to every number on your paper, write whether it was a L or an R. Count up the number of L's and R's. Whichever number is higher represents your dominance. If the numbers are close, that means you use both sides of your brain equally.

KEY… For all YOUR circled #’s write the letter beside it that correlates with the KEY. 1. L 2. L 3. L 4. R 5. L 6. R 7. R 8. L 9. R 10. L 11. L 12. R 13. R 14. L 15. R 16. L 17. L 18. R 19. R 20. R 21. L 22. R 23. R 24. L 25. L 26. L 27. R 28. R 29. L 30. R 31. R 32. L

Mind over Matter Little Lab… Your brain and mind can get your body to do amazing things…. 1. Color Read 2. body twist 3. light as a feather

Nervous System Diseases… Epilepsy : recurrent seizures. Sudden episodes of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. XM (myth and fact about epilepsy) XM

Nervous System Diseases… Multiple Schlerosis: a degenerative disease in which the myelin sheath of neurons are progressively destroyed. Qhttps:// Q (The doctors on MS) &feature=related (18 year old girl with severe onset MS)

ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS is often called Lou Gehrig's disease, after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with it. ALS is a type of motor neuron disease that causes nerve cells to gradually break down and die. begins with muscle twitching and weakness in an arm or leg, or sometimes with slurring of speech. Eventually, ALS can affect your ability to control the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. ALS can't be cured and eventually leads to death.
