Daily Double Graphic and Sound Effect! DO NOT DELETE THIS SLIDE! Deleting it may cause the game links to work improperly. This slide is hidden during the game, and WILL not appear. In slide view mode, copy the above (red) graphic (click once to select; right click the border and choose “copy”). Locate the answer slide which you want to be the daily double Right-click and choose “paste”. If necessary, reposition the graphic so that it does not cover the answer text. Daily Double!!!

Name the three things that make up the cardiovascular system.

1.Heart, 2.Blood, and 3.Blood vessels.

Name the veins where the blood is red in color.

Pulmonary Veins

Name the main parts of the heart and their function.

Left and Right Atrium – receive blood from the body, Left and Right Ventricle – pump blood out of the heart, Valves – prevent blood from flowing backwards, Septum – help separate the heart chambers and valves, and Pacemaker – adjust the speed of the heartbeat.

Name the four valves and the number of flaps for each valve.

1.Tricuspid valve – has three flaps, 2.Pulmonary valve – has three flaps, 3.Mitral valve - has two flaps 4.Aortic valve – has three flaps.

How is the pulse you feel on the inside of your wrist created and what is blood pressure?

A pulse is created when the artery walls expand and narrow as the blood flows. When you count pulse beats, you are also counting heartbeats. Blood pressure is the pressure that blood exerts against the walls of the blood vessels.

Name three kinds of blood vessels and their function.

1.Arteries – carry blood from the heart and into the capillaries, 2. Capillaries – connect arteries and veins and exchange substances between the blood and body’s cells through diffusion, and 3. Veins – carry blood back to the heart.

Name the three major arteries and their function.

1.Aorta Artery – carry blood from the heart to the body, 2.Pulmonary Artery – carry blood from the heart to the lungs, and 3.Coronary Artery – bring blood to the heart. Arteries control the amount of blood that different organs receive.

Name the three layers of cells that make an artery.

1.Outer wall – made of flexible connective tissue. 2. Middle layer – made of muscle tissue, and 3.Inner layer – made of epithelial cells.

Name the three things that keep blood moving. Daily Double!!!

1.Contraction of nearby skeletal muscles, 2.Valves that prevent blood from flowing backward, and 3.Breathing movements that squeeze veins in the chest.

Name the parts of the whole cardiac cycle, in order, beginning with the Vena Cava and ending with the rest of the body.

THE WHOLE CYCLE: Vena Cava Right atrium Tricuspid valve Right ventricle Pulmonary valve Pulmonary artery Lungs Pulmonary veins Left atrium Mitral valve Left ventricle Aortic valve Aorta to the rest of the body

Who discovered the four blood types, what determines a blood type, and why is it important for the blood to match?

Karl Landsteiner discovered the four blood types, marker molecules (antigen A or antigen B) on the red blood cells determine blood type, and blood must match or it will clump and clog capillaries and could lead to death.

Name the type of liquid and the three types of cells in blood and their function.

Three types of cells found in blood are: 1.red blood cells – carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, also contains the hemoglobin, 2.white blood cells – fight disease and infection, and 3.platelets – help form blood clots. Plasma is the liquid found in blood and it carries nutrients, chemical messages and waste.

Name the three steps of how a blood clot forms.

1.Platelets collect and stick to the blood vessel at the site of a wound, 2.A protein called fibrin is produced, and 3.Fibrin makes a net of fibers across the wound to trap blood cells and a clot is formed.

Identify the blood type for each type of protein in its plasma. 1. Anti-B proteins. 2. Anti-A proteins. 3. No clumping proteins 4. Both Anti-A & Anti-B

1.Type A blood - Anti-B proteins. 2.Type B blood - Anti-A proteins. 3.Type AB blood - no clumping proteins 4.Type O blood - both Anti-A & Anti-B.

Name the four blood types and identify which blood type they can safely receive in a transfusion.

Type AB – can receive all blood types Type A – can receive type A or O blood Type B – can receive type B or O blood Type O – can only receive type O blood

What is the leading cause of death in the United States?

Cardiovascular Disease

What are three things a person can do to maintain good cardiovascular health?

1.Exercise regularly, 2.Eat a balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and trans fat, cholesterol and sodium, and 3.Avoid smoking.

A clot that blocks blood flow is called this.

Thrombus A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. A stroke occurs when the blood flow to part of the brain is blocked.

A disorder where the heart works harder and the walls of the blood vessels are damaged over time.

Hypertension It is sometimes called the “silent killer” because people with hypertension often have no obvious symptoms to warn them.

A condition where the artery wall thickens due to buildup of fatty materials and restricts the flow of blood.

Atherosclerosis People with severe atherosclerosis may need surgery or a procedure to unclog blocked arteries.

The most important function of the cardiovascular system.

The most important function of the cardiovascular system is to transport needed materials (food, oxygen and water) to the body’s cells and remove wastes.

Name the instrument that measures blood pressure.

Sphygmomanometer

What is Rh factor?

The Rh factor is the name given to blood that has a protein on the red blood cells. Rh+ means you have the protein. Rh- means you lack the protein and have antibodies against it.

What is hemoglobin and where is it found?

Hemoglobin is a protein containing iron that binds chemically to oxygen molecules, is found in red blood cells, and (hemoglobin + O2 = bright red blood).

Name the most common and the most rare blood types and their unique characteristics.

Blood type O is the most common blood type and is the universal donor. Blood type AB is the most rare with only 4%, but is the universal receiver.
