Define: Circulatory system
It is made up of three things:
The Heart
The Blood Vessels
The Blood
The circulatory system is the body’s delivery system. Delivers Oxygen and removes wastes!

4. Your Heart…. How big? Located? How many times a minute does it beat?
About the size of your fist
Located?
In the center of your chest under your sternum
How many times a minute does it beat?
Count your heartbeat for 10 seconds and multiply by 6

5. The Heart…..
The right and left sides of the heart are divided by a wall called the:
Septum
The septum prevents :
the mixing of oxygen rich blood and oxygen poor blood

6. The Heart…. On each side of the septum are two chambers
The upper chamber is called the atrium.
It receives blood
The lower chamber is called the ventricle.
It pumps out blood.

7. How does blood flow through the heart?
“BLUE SIDE” 1
Deoxygenated blood (low on oxygen)
Wants to get to the lungs 2
Goes to the RIGHT atrium
And the RIGHT Ventricle 3
Goes to the lungs
Picks up the oxygen
Deoxygenated blood passes from right atrium into right ventricle and then goes to the lungs to pick up oxygen. 1 3 2 2

8. How does blood flow through the heart?
“RED SIDE” From the lungs, the oxygenated blood goes back to the heart to the left atrium and then the left ventricle and then pumped to the rest of the body. 1
The blood has become oxygenated
Coming from the lungs 2
Goes back to the heart to LEFT atrium
Then LEFT ventricle 3
The blood (with oxygen) is pumped to the body
The body uses up the oxygen and the process starts over 3 1 2 2

10. Flaps of connective tissue, called VALVES, are located between the atria and ventricles
When blood is flowing the values are open
When the ventricles contract, the valves close to stop blood from going back into the atria

Made of equal parts of solids and liquids
The liquid part of blood is called:
Plasma (mostly water)
The solid parts are blood cells
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets

Disk shaped
Made in the bone marrow

13. White Blood Cells White Blood Cells:
Guard against infection and attack bacteria
When fighting, the number of WBC in your body increases

Carry blood Away from heart to other parts of the body
VEINS:
Carry blood from the body back to the heart
CAPILLARIES
Tiny blood vessels that connect veins and arties to the body’s cells (gases are exchanged)

16. Problems of the Circulatory system

Hypertension: high blood pressure
Heart attack: blockage of blood flow to the heart
Stroke: results from blood clots that block vessels in the brain, or a rupture of a blood vessel
Arteriosclerosis: condition in which arteries harden, reducing the amount of blood that can flow through them
Anemia: abnormally low level of hemoglobin, a protein that binds to oxygen in red blood cells
Leukemia: type of cancer in which large amounts of abnormal white blood cells are produced which interferes with the production of other blood cells
