Role of the Facilitator The most important role of the facilitator is to lay the groundwork for trust to grow as the partnership develops. Openness and informality, the absence of power plays, and sharing ideas help to create on-going relationships. The facilitator builds a foundation of trust and commitment by: Teaching people to think in new ways Establishing brainstorming sessions to allow all ideas to flow Helping tie together various comments, questions and concerns Being sure everyone is aware of decisions being reached Involving the "quiet" people during the meeting Keeping the meetings and discussion focused on the objective of the group Discussing controversial issues thoroughly Being aware of decision-making processes

A positive mental attitude Strong commitment to the goals of the group Ability to listen and reflect on what was presented Neutrality Awareness of what is not being said and how to have it stated Awareness of when to facilitate and when to participate Ability to "seize the moment" Know when to conclude the discussion Good interpersonal communication skills including equal treatment and listening Qualities of Facilitators If the coalition is to succeed, the facilitator must recognize the usefulness and importance of sharing with others across and within systems. Qualities of a successful facilitator are:

Characteristics of Goals It is important to keep certain characteristics in mind as goals are developed. Goals must be:  Believable  Attainable  Tangible  On a Timetable  Win-Win After goals are established, ask coalition members to review them before they are written in final form. Turning Goals into Action It is vital for coalition members to write down the group's goals. Goals that are in one's head are merely dreams, but written goals are a commitment. These questions will help: Where does the group want to be in one year? Six months? What "bite-size" programs or activities will move the coalition toward this position? Miscommunication: A Breakdown in the Process Sometimes a breakdown occurs in the communication process. The message that was sent is not the message that was received. This can be due to a number of factors that act as barriers to or interfere with effective communication. How often do they meet? How much volunteer and professional time is being focused on a particular problem because of the collaboration?
