Time Zones The earth has 24 hours in a day, and 24 different time zones.

All area within a time zone is the same from the north pole to the south pole.

Each is based on 15 o of longitude. When you go east, you go ahead an hour per zone. WE o E 35 o E 50 o E 65 o E 80 o E 95 o E ABCDEF

Canada’s Time Zones Canada stretches almost 90 o from east to west. How many time zones do we have?

Canada’s Time Zones Find the six different blue colours-one per zone. (Ignore yellow and dark purple). The lines of longitude have been adjusted. Why?

Why countries adjust their time zone boundary lines To avoid passing through a city To go around physical features such as a mountain that naturally divide an area To make all of a province be in the same time zone

World Time Zones

Daylight Savings advance clocks one hour so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less clocks are adjusted forward one hour in spring and are adjusted backward in fall. modern daylight savings time (DST) was first proposed in 1907

DST- Pros and Cons adds daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that use sunlight after working hours, causes problems for farming, entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun because less light in the morning an early goal was to reduce evening usage of electric power for lighting complicates timekeeping and can disrupt meetings, travel, recordkeeping, medical devices

Although not used by most of the world's people, daylight saving time is common in high latitudes.latitudes At the tropics, near the Equator, the hours of daylight are constant. At mid and high latitudes, summers have long days and winter has short days because of the tilt of the earth. (blue) DST used (orange) DST no longer used (red) DST never used
