1 Time Zones Introduction

2 To improve communications and create a uniform system of time, a Canadian named Sir Sanford Fleming came up with the idea that the world needed to be divided into time zones. The world was divided into time zones in 1884. This way, it is always one of the hours of the day somewhere in the world.

3 SIR SANDFORD FLEMING What didn’t he do?
He designed Canada’s first postage stamp – the Three penny beaver He designed 3 railways and personally drove the “last spike” in the CPR Railroad He created STANDARD TIME ZONES!

4 Where did Sir Fleming make this discovery?
In Greenwich, England, of course (East London)

5 Standing on the Prime Meridian

6 Greenwich Mean Time – The Reference Point for all Time Zones

7 LONGITUDE AND TIME The world rotates (spins) counter clockwise 360° in 24 hours. 360° / 24 hours = 15° per hour The world has 24 time zones, each l5° apart. THERE IS A 1 HOUR TIME DIFFERENCE FOR EVERY 15° OF LONGITUDE

8 Lines on the Earth

9 Greenwich, England is the starting point for time zones
The world rotates west to east (counterclockwise), so time zones to the east are ahead of those time zones to the west

11 Canada has 6 time zones Many of Canada’s time zones are drawn along provincial or territorial boundaries, but there are some exceptions. Generally speaking, a time zone is approximately 15º of longitude from its easternmost to its westernmost boundary. 360º (the earth) divided by 24 hours (or time zones) = 15 º for each time zone.

12 Going West: SUBTRACT Time!
THE TIMEZONE RULE Going East : ADD Time! Going West: SUBTRACT Time! Generally 1 hour per time zone.

13 Time is forward to all places to the east WEST LESS
A CHEESY SAYING EAST INCREASE Time is forward to all places to the east WEST LESS Time is backward to all places to the west

14 Time Zones Canada uses six primary time zones. From east to west they are: Newfoundland Standard Time (1/2 hr) Atlantic Standard Time Eastern Standard Time Central Standard Time Mountain Standard Time Pacific Standard Time Tock Tick

15 THE EXCEPTION! Every time zone in Canada is separated by one hour, EXCEPT for Newfoundland. They are separated by half an hour, or 30 minutes.

16 If it is 5:00 pm in St. John’s, what time is it in Toronto?
Toronto is West of St. John’s. 2 time zones west, so we need to subtract time. From Newfoundland to Atlantic time zone is 30 min difference (4:30) From Atlantic to Eastern is 1 hour Therefore, the time is 3:30 pm ? 5:00 pm

17 If it is 8:00 pm in Toronto, what time is it in Edmonton?
Edmonton is WEST of Toronto. According to the time zone map, it is 2 time zones west. (Remember, west = subtract time) (1 hour/time zone) Therefore, the local time in Edmonton is 6:00pm 8:00 pm ?

18 If it is 9:00AM in Mississauga, what time is it in Vancouver, B.C.?

19 Time zones of the world:

21 Earth rotates west to east Solar time is based on the position of the sun NIGHT IS FALLING ON EARTH
Look at the East Coast of the United States. The lights are already lit. California the sun is still visible.

22 This pictures shows AMERICAN CITIES at night.

23 It’s still daylight in California
Saguenay Sept-Iles Thunder Bay Toronto St.John Ottawa It’s still daylight in California Québec Montréal Those light are Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Detroit Dallas Puerto Rico Houston Miami Mexico City Havana Port-au-Prince

Look at Paris and Barcelona, the lights are already lit, meanwhile in London, Lisbon and Madrid the sun is still visible. Looking south, we can see the islands in the middle of the ocean. We have a great view of the British Islands, Iceland and Greenland.

25 Iceland England Atlantic Ocean France Spain Italy AFRICA

26 Assignment Imagine you are the road manager for your favorite band (or sports team). Your job is to: Write a paragraph giving information about your band (or team) Create a cross country tour making at least 8 stops (in all 6 time zones in Canada) Use a chart to show both local time and Mountain Standard Times for the shows/games. 8 cities visited (8 marks), time zones correct (8 marks), paragraph (4 marks), creativity (4 marks) (24 Marks total)
