Our Kindergarten Philosophy Our Kindergarten program is designed to instill a love of learning within your child. We believe that all students are capable, curious, and creative learners. We encourage children to treat others the way that they would like to be treated.

Math

Math In Focus Concepts are taught through a sequence of concrete - pictorial - abstract Concrete -hands-on activities with manipulatives Pictorial- uses pictures Abstract- numbers and symbols Frequent use of manipulatives A Typical lesson Teaching Presentation, Guided practice, independent practice Teaches to mastery

Writing

Writer’s Workshop Children write about topics of their choice Mini Lessons are done daily Based on the belief that “one becomes a more fluent and confident writer, the more frequently one writes!” Children will “publish” a book by the end of the year

Writing Stages Scribble Linear Mock Writing Pre-Phonemic Early Phonemic Letter Name Spelling Transitional Spelling

Why is Invented or Temporary Spelling Important? It allows children to express ideas without any fears of being right or wrong. It helps children learn to read by giving them practice connecting sounds to letters. It encourages children to become independent writers.

Interactive or Shared Writing Teaches good writing strategies that will be helpful when doing independent writing Breaks down the writing process into the smallest of steps, with much support and room for risk taking

Reading

Speech and Language Development Research has shown that by age five, children are able to create 5 to 6 word sentences and have a vocabulary of 1,500 to 2,500 words.** What Parents Can Do.. Talk to your child. Listen to your child. Read to your child often. Play games, both word games and dramatic play. Provide new experiences. Make language and speech fun for your child.

What is Phonemic Awareness? Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the individual sound units (phonemes) in spoken language, to examine language independent of meaning, to see relationships between sounds in words, and to rearrange sounds to create new words.

Guided Reading Reading instruction that takes place in small groups with a strategy based focus lesson The text is at the child’s instructional reading level Usually begins in January

Shared Reading Students are : Tracking print word by word Learning to infer and predict Masking letters and words Expanding vocabulary and building on their concepts about print Focusing on story elements

Wilson Fundations Fundations is systematic because it follows a very defined sequence for teaching and it follows a specific procedure for teaching these concepts. Fundations is explicit because it does not leave any room for guessing. It teaches all concepts directly. Fundations at Home Pages can be found on our school Edline page. Please print them out each week, to reinforce skills.
