Creative Teacher Week Effective use of ICT to promote learning – where are we?

The bright new future….. again…..!

… from this ….. to this? Or is it….

Trying to do today……. Evaluate how we use our existing resources to improve pupil progress. Think about how we might be more effective. Consider how we might better share ideas.

A couple of thoughts for discussion later…… Pupils will very often quietly get on with presentations etc. in class, or for homework…… but are they learning the skills they are supposed to be, or just making what they already know look pretty? Should we think more carefully about the tasks that we set them when using ICT resources? Are we neglecting other forms of ICT by always focussing on the PC? As a school do we make best use of what we already have available? VLE? Doddle? – If not why not?

Starter! Click the monkey and take the quiz!

Podcast Example

Teacher resources examples:

Street View example 8 Rue du Pont de Pierre, Pantin, Île-de- France, France

Google Earth

Video group presentation Very simple: Pupils prepare in groups to teach a point / concept etc. and this is filmed. Film can be used for peer review etc. but mainly focuses them!

Webquest task Rather than just getting students to search for information provide a set of links to sites you know are useful. Avoids Google/Wikepedia rewrites!

Précis of long text Provide long text on VLE and pupils have to use Word to do a précis in strictly limited number of words. Wordcount feature of Word is used to check.

Bad PowerPoint Provide them with an poor and innacurate PowerPoint which they have to correct and refine (or just correct) helps to avoid the tendency to focus on presentation rather than content.

Bad PowerPoint Provide them with a poor and inaccurate PowerPoint which they have to correct and refine (or just correct) helps to avoid the tendency to focus on presentation rather than content.

Annotated image Project image, map, diagram etc. on to board (Notebook) and have pupils annotate it / correct it etc.

Video without sound Play video with no sound and pupils explain / produce dialogue / finish story etc. Film trailers useful.

Use PowerPoint timings Have lesson sequence / instructions / resources on PPT slides which are timed to advance automatically.

Timers / dice Range of timers at (also on Notebook) Various random dice on Notebook. Ant4Pizza timer – needs installing but useful - you can set up your own timings.

Excel graph Get pupils to give order of importance of fact / concept etc enter on to Excel and use graph feature to produce instant graph for discussion.

Projection Project image behind pupil / pupils with back turned. Others have to explain image (set limits on vocab / number of words et)

Quick roundup: Flash animations Podcasts Radio programmes Video Clips – it is possible to upload videos to YouTube that are not accessible to general public. Notebook – very useful tool

Resources – not computer!

Other free ICT resources already in your room? Video recording device? Online dictionary? Sound recording device? Timer?

Share & discuss! Your ideas? Comments on things viewed? How can we better share? Pitfalls to be avoided? Please can we avoid the usual discussion on hardware issues, pupils being blocked etc. A valid discussion; but for another day…. Today is Bob the Builder YES WE CAN day!
