Content The purpose of this assignment is to teach students to summarize stories/books/ pieces of writing that they have read and will create a persuasive presentation on their topic. The students will learn to use technology to plan, edit, and create a project of their choosing. This project is also teaching students to use technology (other ways) to help them take notes during their reading, picking out key details other people should know, helping them organize their thoughts, and create an appealing presentation on what they have taken away from the reading. They will work with other students and teachers to create and critique presentations. One scenario this unit plan could be used for would be a history unit. Students would first select books to read on a given history topic and then would use note taking tools and storyboarding tools (Evernote, and PBS Storyboard) to organize the main ideas they have read about. The students would then use a presentation tool (Animoto, Spreaker DJ, iMovie) to create a trailer to persuade their classmates to read those books as well. This would require students to use techniques to interest other students in what they have read while also giving a summary of what they have read. MENU

Rationale Evernote- We are teaching students to use Evernote for this project to allow them to explore note-taking apps. Evernote is compatible with every piece of technology, and your notes are automatically saved onto your account. Students will be able to take notes and save other resources (like articles, videos, pictures) into their folder. This is a helpful resource to refer back to when creating a final product of any topic, students will easily be able to find all the information they have written and saved. PBS Storyboard- This technology is similar to Evernote. Students can keep their notes, and organize their thoughts through text, clip art, pictures, and videos. Storyboarding creates more defined sections for a student’s presentation. They will be using this tool to give a complete outline for their production. Storyboarding can be used for any other project, to help students keep their thoughts organized and in the correct timeline. Animoto- Students have the option to use Animoto as a final product for their presentation. Animoto is more of a scaffolded presentation tool, which allows students to put in pictures, text and music in the appropriate places. For students who are ELLs, this product is easy to navigate and only requires simple title texts. Students who struggling with literacy focused projects can use this as well.

Rationale continued.. Spreaker DJ- Students who are overwhelmed by using audio and visuals can concentrate all of their focus on audio alone by producing a podcast. This application allows students to use music tracks and sound effects to increase the effect of their speaking. Students will still need to have a focus on their topic to engage the listener. We are teaching students how to use this podcasting tool because it might be important for some students to focus solely on what is being said rather than what is being seen. iMovie- Students who are comfortable creating a trailer on their own can use iMovie, this tool can be used for students who are proficient or advanced in writing and have an understanding of the topic. We are teaching students to use iMovie because we want to push their thinking and production skills; they can use this tool for many other projects in the future. MENU

Helpful Evernote Tips: Create more than one notebook for easier, organized notes Create hashtags for your notes, a way to keep certain notes together (#bookreport1, #chapter3, #storyboard2) Set reminders, to-do lists Search your notes for specific words MENU

PBS Storyboard Students will use this unique storyboarding tool that incorporates different types of media to organize their ideas and possible spark new ideas for the creation of their book trailers. 11 Introduction to Presentation Applications We will briefly describe all of the applications students can use to create their movie trailers and go over more of the details of the project, students will have previously been introduced to this assignment because they would have spent time collecting notes about their book and thinking of how they would like to summarize what they read in and interesting and compelling way. Application Options: o Podcast using Spreaker DJ o You can create a radio advertisement for your book using music, voice-over, and sound effects. o Movie trailer using Animoto o You can create a movie trailer with pictures and music and text. o Movie trailer using iMovie o You can make a movie trailer by actually filming it and editing it as well as adding in music, text, and sound effects. MENU

iMovie We wont go into great detail about how to use iMovie because only a small subset of the overall class would be using this application we would only give instruction on this tool to those students. We might create a screen-cast explaining how to add video and audio and images or if the students using iMovie were already fairly technologically savvy we could just spend a few minutes during work time explaining how the to create a movie trailer using iMovie.
