2 OBJECTIVES  Participants will learn the basic elements of a Project- Based Learning unit.  Participants will create a Project-Based Learning Unit in the form of a Google Trek.

3 WHAT IS PROJECT BASED LEARNING  A dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real- world problems and challenges.  Students learn by doing.  Learning results in demonstrations of performance.  Students create something that demonstrates their learning. 4 ELEMENTS OF PROJECT BASED LEARNING 1. Driving question 2. Inquiry based 3. The teacher guides as students explore a topic. 4. Each student, or groups of students, present their work at the end if the unit.

5 GOOGLE TREK  The project for student completion is in the form of a Google Map  Teacher places checkpoints or pushpin marks on the map.  Each checkpoint or pushpin on the map may contain text, pictures, video, and links to other sites.  The use of the Google Map makes it so research information is in one convenient location.  Checkpoints and pushpin locations guide and scaffold student research.  Use of web 2.0 tools to promote collaboration and interaction among students.  Battles of the Civil War Battles of the Civil War  Digital Road Trip Digital Road Trip  Dialogue Language Arts Dialogue Language Arts  Olympic Games Olympic Games

12 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOGLE TREK Your GoogleTrek will contain the following characteristics:  Content linked to standards  Clear purpose for students  Promote engagement  Use at least 2 web 2.0 tools, including Google Maps  Use graphics or images  Link to other websites  Clear sequence that scaffolds the learner’s progress  Font is clear and easy to read
