Questions page 39 3. They were searching for a Northwest passage to Asia. 4. French in Quebec and Dutch in New York 6. French settlements were along the St. Lawrence River; British colonies were along the Atlantic coast.

Reading Study Guide Spain: Has the largest and wealthiest colonies Built large empire in the Americas (from 1492 to 1500s) England: English sailors raid Spanish galleons. England’s defeat over Spain proved that England could remain Protestant and defend itself. The world saw that Spain could be beaten.

Reading Study Guide France: searches for Northwest Passage In 1608, French explorer Champlain founded a fur trading post at Quebec, now a major eastern Canadian city. This became the first permanent French settlement in Canada. The Netherlands: trades with Native Americans for furs to sell in Europe The Dutch built a colony called New Netherland that was located along the Hudson River in present-day New York.

Essential Question: How did Europeans transform life in the Americas? England, France, and the Netherlands competed with Spain to find wealth in the Americas. The defeat of the Spanish Armada by England in 1588 weakened Spain. The settlements of Quebec and New Netherlands thrived as fur trade centers were supplied by Native Americans.
