6 Northwest Passage From 1500s and early 1600s many English, French, and Dutch explorers hoped to find the northwest passage. Northwest Passage was a direct water route through the Americas that would lead to Asia.

9 England Takes Control of the Seas
England becomes a Protestant country They defeat the Spanish armada (war fleet) in 1588. Spain will lose control of the seas—it is time for England to take over the seas and start new colonies in North America.

10 Spanish Settlements Florida, Southwest (Texas, New Mexico, California)
Spanish missionaries convert Natives to the Catholic religion

11 French Settlements French are interested in trading (fur, fish).
New France colony is made along the St. Lawrence River (Canada). Tenant farmers worked the land. Also created a settlement called the Louisiana colony (1682) along the Mississippi River. French founded New Orleans (1718) Convert Indians into Catholics

12 Dutch Settlements The Dutch wanted to expand and find new land.
Created the New Netherland colony in 1623. New Amsterdam is the colony’s main town—located in Manhattan Island (New York). Dutch bought Manhattan Island for $24 from the Manhattan Indians.
