German priest who questioned the authority of Catholics leaders in 1517
Nailed list of complaints to church doors
Catholic church refused his ideas
Luther started the reformation
Led to a new form of Christianity- Protestantism
Protestants did not recognize the Pope as the leader of the church

5. Religious Rivalries in Europe and the Americas
Besides searching for wealth, Europeans wanted to spread their Christian faith in the New World
Roman Catholics were first to reach the Americas
King Henry VIII
Left the Catholic Church because they would not let him get a divorce
Created the Church of England
Daughter, Elizabeth I, made England more of a Protestant nation video
King Philip of Spain
1588, sent his navy to invaded England and wanted to bring Catholicism back to England, (lost)

6. Religious Rivalries in Europe and the Americas
In the Americas
Catholics from Spain and France wanted to spread their religion to Native Americans
Spanish in Southwestern & Southeastern North America
France in the Northeast
Protestants from the Netherlands and England set up colonies along the Atlantic between the French and Spanish
This causes rivalries between the settlements

France- Sailed up St. Lawrence River and discovered Montreal, Canada
Henry Hudson
Englishman sent by the Netherlands- discovered the Hudson River, Bay, and Albany, NY

8. French Settlements
French were more concerned with resources in the new world
Traded with Native Americans
Missionaries came after the traders
Exploring the Mississippi River
1670s- Joliet & Marquette traveled the Mississippi thinking they had found the Northwest Passage and learned it flowed into the Gulf of Mexico
1682- Robert Cavelier de La Salle followed the river to the Gulf and claimed the land for France calling it Louisiana
1718- France founded New Orleans

9. French Settlements New France French settlement was slow
Estates were set up along the St. Lawrence River
Settlers were brought in in exchange for land
Tenant farmers would work land for the owners for a certain period of time
Got along with Native Americans

10. Dutch Settlements
The Netherlands (Dutch) wanted to gain more resources to send back to their small country
Had a huge naval fleet set up for trade between the Americas, Africa, and the Netherlands
The Dutch West India Company
New Amsterdam was its main colony in the Americas
Built on the tip of Manhattan Island, but the island was later bought from the Manhattoes people for about $24 worth of goods
