 Railway transport in Russia - one of the largest railway networks in the world, in existence since 1837 and with 86 thousand km of railways, of which about half - electrified. By the total length of railways Russia takes 2nd place, behind only the United States (194.7 sq km). By the length of electrified roads (43 sq km) Russia is one place in the world.

The History of the Russian railway  The Russian government is worried about the problems laying the railway in the early XIX century. The basis for this trend was the Department of Water Communications, established in 1798 by Emperor Paul I approved the project. Organization headed by NP Rumyantsev. Department of the Rumyantsev acted successfully grew rapidly and in 1809 expanded his powers and was renamed the Office of Water and Land Communications.
