ADVERBS

DEFINITION An Adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. We some times say that an adverb describes or modifies ( limits the meaning of) these words.

USES OF ADVERBS To describe a verb Nanda sings well. To describe an adjective To describe another adverb. Nanda sings well. This soap is delicately perfumed. He speaks very fluently.

FORMATION OF ADVERBS

We can form adverbs usually by adding ‘-ly’ to adjectives. Able Fair Quiet Usual Vicious Quick Rough loud Ably Fairly Quietly Usually Viciously Quickly Roughly Loudly

Adjectives ending in ‘-y’ preceded by a consonant are converted into adverbs by dropping the ‘y’ and adding ‘-ily’ Noisy Happy Merry Lucky Sleepy Easy Noisily Happily Merrily Luckily Sleepily easily

However, some adverbs without ‘-ly’ are also found. Johny runs very fast. Suzy is quiet beautiful. The boy ran fast. He paints well.

A lonely boy Friendly neighbours A lovely present Not all words that end in ‘-ly’ are adverbs. Some adjectives end in ‘-ly’ , too. A lonely boy Friendly neighbours A lovely present

Some adverbs have two forms , each of which has a different meaning. He worked very hard. (with a lot of effort) He hardly works. (very little, almost never) I got up late this morning. (not on time) I haven't seen Tony lately . ( recently)
