Presentation on theme: "Adverbs and Adjectives"— Presentation transcript:

1 Adverbs and Adjectives
Adjectives modify a noun; i.e. they describe a person or a thing. He is beautiful. Adverbs modify a verb; i.e. they describe how something is done. He sings beautifully.

2 Exceptions That smells delicious. The cake tastes great. That seems impossible. The verbs seem, appear, taste, smell, look, feel and sound are followed by adjectives not adverbs Taste, smell, feel and look can be followed by an adverb if they describe an action rather than a quality. Knowing how badly she cooks, we tasted the soup carefully, but it tasted delicious.

3 Adverbs can also be used to modify adjectives and other adverbs He was terribly sad. She writes incredibly slowly

4 How to make adverbs In most cases adverbs are made by simply adding –ly to an adjective beautiful - beautifully glad – gladly If the adjective ends in –y, that letter is changed to i before the –ly is added angry – angrily happy – happily If the adjective ends in –ble, we just change the –e to –y horrible – horribly incredible - incredibly

5 Exceptions Some adverbs look the same as the adjective late
hard fast lately and hardly do exist, but they mean something else. He works hard and He hardly works do not mean the same thing

6 Exceptions 2 Some adjectives have a completely seperate adverb. The most important of them is good which becomes well as an adverb. He is a good singer. He sings well.
