2 Adverbs - Modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb. The adverb tells how, when, where, or to what extent (how much, how long, or how often).

3 Let’s look at Taylor Swift again… Taylor enthusiastically performed and dramatically sang for her fans. What are the two adverbs in this sentence? Write them down!

4 Let’s look at the other ways adverbs are used... Taylor Swift sang outside. (where) She performed Saturday. (when) The crowd clapped loudly. (how) Taylor never stopped! (to what extent) Write down the adverbs you see in the above sentences.

5 Adverbs can modify adjectives It was an extremely crowded concert. (The adverb “extremely” modifies the adjective “crowded”) The exceptionally talented Ms. Swift kept on singing! (The adverb “exceptionally” modifies the adjective “talented”).

6 Adverbs can modify other adverbs! The concert crowd cheered exceptionally loudly. Taylor will rest her voice and sing later today. Write down the adverb that is modifying the other adverb in the above sentences.

7 Some tips to identifying adverbs... Many (but not all) adverbs end in -ly. For example, “nicely”, “loudly”, or “quietly”. You try it... change each of the following words into an adverb: boldmad foolish lazy slow nervous

8 And there are adverbs that DON’T end in –ly! Write these examples down! John looked around for the monkey. He’s going back to the zoo. Luckily, the monkey cage is nearby.
