English Exploration and the Roanoke Voyages of

England’s first claim to North America came in Cabot claimed Newfoundland for England. (Henry VII) England hoped to decrease Spanish power and get richer by planting colonies in North America. SuccessNot a colony attempt.

Newfoundland Sir Humphrey Gilbert The queen gave Gilbert power to govern any colony set up for 1/5 of all gold and silver found.

Success or Failure? The Canadian wilderness was too harsh for a colony. The ship sank during the return trip to England. Everyone died. FAILURE!

Because a silver cup was stolen, an Indian village was burned. Lane felt Indians weren’t sharing enough food, so he attacks them again. Village attacked and Wingina beheaded.

Success of Failure? They arrived too late to plant crops. They had very bad relations with the Indians. The weather was bad. They left 15 men behind. FAILURE!
