3 Problems with the Roman Catholic Church
The Pope (which is the leader of the church) made all decision, you have to abide by them. There is no divorce. Forgiveness for you sins could be bought due to corruption in the church.

4 Martin Luther’s Idea He believes that you do not need the church to guide you spiritually. You can ask for forgiveness yourself directly. Pins 95 pages thesis on door of church. Started Protestant faith. Due to the invention of printing press idea spreads fast.

Did not produce a male heir wanted a divorce but the Pope told him NO! He created his own church (the Church of England) which divorce is aloud. Married six different women until he got a son.

8 Sir Walter Raleigh Queen Elizabeth granted Sir Walter Raleigh money to explore the New World He sent Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe They Claimed a small inlet the Indians called Roanoke. They brought back to England with them notebooks of information, samples of plants and two Indians that helped them Manteo and Wanchese

9 The Lane Colony In 1585 Raleigh sent a second expedition to the Roanoke Richard Grenville Commanded the Ships Ralph Lane was sent to built protection around settlement Thomas Harriot was a noted poet, mathematician and scientist. He helped develop algebra and experimented with the telescope John White was an artist and his water color paintings of the Indians brought back visual evidence for those in England

10 The Lane Colony Continued
Harriot and White’s discovery's where put in the British Museum of History and advanced exploration for England. Lane got money hungry and dug for gold instead of building protection for the fort. This upset local Natives and caused a mini war along with not increasing their food stores, they stated to starve. Sir Francis Drake an English pirate came to the colonies rescue in 1586 and they abandon the colony and set sail back to England.

11 The White Colony Raleigh was determined to settle Roanoke so this time he sent John White as the leader due to his experience and woman and children. 110 in all. Despite the help of Manteo the colony ran short on supplies and White left to sail back to England to get help Due to fights with Spain John White could not return for three years Upon his return White did not find anyone, yet he did find two clues

12 The White Colony Continued
The colonist often talked of moving the colony due to bad weather. If they were to move they would carve their new location into a tree for White to find. A cross above the word meant that the colonists were in danger. White found the word CROATOAN on a fence post which was the name of the tribe in which Manteo lived, yet it had no cross above it. Due to damage to the ship White was not aloud to sail the 50 to Hatteras and was destroyed by the choice to sail back to England to avoid hurricane season.
