Exploring the experiences of Higher Education students living off campus in an inner London estate as part of their university experience. Sue McKinney April 2016

The historical/geographical aspect of my research

Mount Clare – Danebury Avenue. Notice the open grazing park land.

Parkstead/Bessborough/Manresa House – Whitelands Campus

Grove House - Froebel

Roehampton School House – Roehampton Lane

Elm Grove now rebuilt as Sacred Heart on Digby Campus

How the spaces have changed

The Sociological aspects of my research - the multi-layered ethnography

The ‘norm’? The ‘other’? The ‘alien’? ‘Belonging’? Identity? Sameness? Community? Personal geographies? Subjectivity? Deconstruction? Habitus?

Higher education institutional identities are being reshaped by processes of corporatisation, globalisation and neoliberalism. Universities must compete with each other reflecting the neo-liberal consumer democracy (Harris, 2005). ‘Corporate image and identity is increasingly important as universities sell themselves and their ‘brand name’ which intensifies institutional competition as they compete to maintain their market position’ (Cunningham et al, 2000 quoted by Harris, 2005:424).
