1 Writing with Impact: Personal Strategies
Rachel Handforth @Rach_Handforth Writing with Impact: Personal Strategies @Rach_Handforth

2 Impact? Something that is read, used and considered to be useful by others. Things to consider: How are you going to communicate your work? Your audience- who might use it? Specific audience or generalist? How might others be able to use it? Are there things you can do to help others to use your work? within which I take the several kinds of data I've collected and construct narrative accounts of participants' experiences Explain a bit about number of participants- from two institutions, across subject areas, started their full-time PhD at the same time as I did- in October 2014. @Rach_Handforth

3 My 'Outputs' As well as formal academic outputs such as journal articles, I have enjoyed communicating my research to different audiences. I have used media outlets to promote my research, such as an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield to discuss my work on Blurred Lines @Rach_Handforth

4 My 'Outputs' Co-written article based on past work
Co-written articles under review- but takes time Blog posts Book Review Book chapter based on PhD work Hope to publish a monograph- currently negotiating with publisher Presenting at conferences also counts! Potential to work up conference papers into articles, or upload the presentations onto Research Gate, academia.edu etc @Rach_Handforth

5 Blog Writing https://rachelhandforth.wordpress.com/
Started it because I was told it was a useful way of demonstrating my ability to write for multiple audiences. Useful now as: A way of reflecting on my work A tool to reach out to other researchers Making new connections Method of communicating my thoughts in a clear and concise way A place to get things off my chest! @Rach_Handforth

6 Blog Writing @Rach_Handforth

7 Blog Writing @Rach_Handforth

9 Strategies for Impact Collaborate with others, especially those working in other disciplines Reach out to groups and networks with similar approaches/values/areas of interest Identify relevant publishers and journals Use a range of methods to communicate work, including platforms that are less ‘academic’ @Rach_Handforth

10 Challenges Finding the time to write!
Ever-increasingly becoming a requirement for most academic posts How best to prioritise- articles versus books The period of time between submitting work and it being published Not compromising quality/depth of work Stern Review- implications of who can ‘claim’ work within the REF units of assessment @Rach_Handforth

11 Future Plans @Rach_Handforth
