East And Southeast Asia Country Governments

Japan Japan's government is a democratic parliamentary government, with a constitutional monarchy as the head of state. Japan's Imperial role is essentially only as a figurehead now, and the Emperor has no defined governmental power. He remains the ceremonial head of state, and presides over ceremonies and represents his nation internationally at public functions that do not require a political presence. The head of government, the Prime Minister, holds real power.

China China's government is a communist government. China is both a limited and unlimited government. It is a dictatorship, but it has clear branches of government that can act as checks and balances to different authorities. There are limits to how much power any one branch can have or impose. However, Chinese citizens have few protections from the government which they can use to protect themselves.

North Korea The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, known more commonly as North Korea, is a communist state and a dictatorship. Chief of State Kim Jong-un and Premier Pak Pong-ju oversee federal government matters from the nation's capital, Pyongyang. While Pak Pong-ju is head of the nation's government, Kim Jong-un leads the National Defense Commission of North Korea.

South Korea Korea traces its founding to 2333 BC by the legendary Dangun. Since the establishment of the modern republic in 1948, South Korea struggled with the aftermath of Japanese occupation ( ), the Korean War ( ), and decades of authoritarian governments, undergoing five major constitutional changes. While the government officially embraced Western-style democracy from its founding, presidential elections suffered from rampant irregularities. It was not until 1987 that direct and fair presidential elections were held, largely prompted by popular demonstrations. South Korea has been a vibrant multi-party democracy for two decades.

Vietnam Type of government: socialist republic (also considered by some as a Communist State) with a constitution Legislature: unicameral (one house) National Assembly (consisting of 500 members elected by popular vote to serve five-year terms) The National Assembly elects the president (from among the its members) who appoints the prime minister who then appoints the deputy prime ministers. Appointment of prime minister and deputy prime ministers confirmed by National Assembly.
