Presentation transcript:

SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS

 Eyes – what to look at – front of rim  Feet – Balance – point at rim or angle  Shooting foot – Forward and at middle of rim  Elbow – straight – over shooting toe  Hand – behind ball – avoid rolling  Wrist – cocked back on catch (avoid claw)  Fingers – wide base – keep thumb back (big hands)  Arm – 90 degree angle – make a box  Balance – keep weight even on both feet and middle  Hips – low and back STARTING POINT

 Lift – Rotate at shoulder  – get to “Plate of Pasta” position  Ball goes up straight  Keep one constant speed on lift  Imagine ball going up an elevator shaft  Hips and legs start to lift also  Wrist – Keep it cocked back  Arms – Keep the 90 degrees – keep the box  Balance – Keep balance  (avoid tendency to lean forward or fall backwards) INITIAL MOVEMENT

 Arm – continue up elevator shaft  – avoid hitch  – caused by not having wrist cocked or bend at elbow  Shooting hand goes straight through  Off hand opens up at wrist  – avoid rotating of wrist  Full Extension of arms and body RELEASE

 SHOT MUST BE REPEATABLE  First question…  How does it leave your hand?  Most players do not know  Three methods  5 to pointer finger  5 – 3 – 1 Middle finger  5 – 2 – balanced between pointer finger and middle finger HOW TO TEACH? USE REVERSE CHAIN

 Sweet spot – Balanced holding plate of pasta  Roll off two fingers  See it go over at highest release point  Finish tall – release hand straight up TEACH RELEASE 1 ROLL OVER TWO FINGERS

 Sweet spot – Balanced holding plate of pasta  Flick off two fingers  Wait to see it – then flick to feel it  Finish tall – release hand straight up TEACH RELEASE 2 FLICK OVER TWO FINGERS

 Lie down and find Sweet spot  Elbow straight  Ball must go directly up elevator shaft  Finish with good wrist action TEACH RELEASE 3 LIE DOWN – SHOOT STRAIGHT UP

 Start at Sweet spot  Balanced about 2 feet from rim  Ball must hit backboard above box  Forces high release point TEACH RELEASE 4 HIGH RELEASE

 Start at Sweet spot  Focus on  Balance  High release  Follow Through  Ball leaving two fingers  BALL MUST GO STRAIGHT By shooting on line, side of backboard or wall it removes the false reinforcement of a ball going in when it was not straight or the ball missing but being shot straight. Focus on form and ball travelling straight – lots of reps TEACH RELEASE 5 FOCUS ON SHOOTING STRAIGHT HIGH REPS

 Make off hand stiff  Allow only front of knuckles to touch ball  Break wrist open as shooting hand is about to release  Follow through with off hand- finishes facing basket  Common mistakes to avoid  Rotation of wrist  (thumb pushes ball – release is with outside fingers)  Swinging off hand open  Not following through with off hand  Ball rubs off of off hand TEACH OFF HAND OFF HAND STIFF

 Make square – 90 degrees angles  Hand faces the wall  Rotate arm so that only movement is at shoulder  Rotate until holding “Plate of Pasta”  From there lift to release point  Common Mistakes  Elbow turns out  Bend of elbow as the lift is done  Ball not lifted straight up over toe TEACH LIFT

REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS 3 IN A ROW  Groups of 3  Make 3 in a row – step back  Miss 2 in a row – step forward  Peer pressure to make shots

REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS WALK THE DOG  Pairs (or more)  Shoot from free throw line  Ball must return to you inside the key  Balls that go left tell the shooter that they are shooting right  Balls that go right tell the shooter that they are shooting left  If shooter “walks the dog”, he keeps shooting

REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS WALK THE DOG – TOP OF KEY  Pairs (or more)  Shoot from top of the key  Ball must return to you inside the key  Forcing to be perfect from 3 point line  Shooter should push up and finish just inside the 3 point line

REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS DROP AND POP  Spin the ball in front  Land 1 -2 with shooting foot and hip forward  Catch in shooting pocket – prepare early  Eliminate or minimize dipping  Feet should land about 1 foot forward  Eliminate left or right landing of feet  Find rim early with eyes

GAME SPEED DRILLS 2 MINUTE DRILL  2 Balls with a partner  Passer hits shooting chin  Each shooter must make 20 Shots in 2 Minutes  6 from second block  Jump Stop/ Chin Ball / Front pivot / Ball should be up when turn  4 from inside foul line  7 from 15 feet  3 from 3 point line

GAME SPEED DRILLS PARTNER VOLUME SHOOTING  3 groups of partners at each rim  Shooters are at each wing and top  Shooters remain at location for 1 minute  Must move left or right after each shot  Passer must hit shooter on shooting chin

GAME SPEED DRILLS CATCH IN TRANSITION  Same setup as previous  Must go back 15 feet after each shot and return  1 Min – Shoot on catch  1 Min – Through the legs or behind the back  1 Min – Step back

GAME SPEED DRILLS CLOSEOUT DRILL  5 Men 3 Balls  Passer closes out on shooter  Force to shoot – quicker, more arc, move eyes etc.  Shooter prepares early for shot  Emphasis is not changing shooting motion  Spots  Corner  Low Wing  High Wing  Elbow extended  Top of key

GAME SPEED DRILLS POP OUT SERIES  Pass – Jab and come off screen  Catch on dominant foot – Square up while landing  Be balanced coming off movement and during shot  1 – Curl  2 – Curl – Shot fake, power dribble and power move at rim  3 – Pop for 3 – Catch and pop  4 – Pop and Rip  5 – Pop and pull back  6 – Fade  7 – Step back

GAME SPEED DRILLS PULL UP SERIES  Pull up jumpers  Get low on last dribble  Land balanced – shoot balanced – finish balanced  1 - Attack outside – Shoot off glass in “V”  2- Attack Inside – get to the paint  Follow up with pull up 3  Use – Stop and pop, through legs, behind back, step back
