What’s NEW ? Students: n Attend 4 Core subjects: ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science n Attend 7 periods: 4 Core & 3 Encore classes each day n Begin school at 7:36 AM & end at 2:23 PM* n Switch classes each period n Use lockers with combination locks n Have a 30 minute lunch period that includes 10 minute recess * TBA

FOOD SERVICE n Breakfast and lunch available daily n Computerized cafeteria system n Parents can pre-pay for food items at school or online n Free & reduced forms available n Student ID’s are required

Transportation n Students will ride busses with middle and high school students n Bus Supervisors wear orange vests and are on duty after 7:15 AM in the morning and after school until 2:30 PM n Specific questions should be directed to Transportation at

What if I drive my child to school? n Student drop off area is located at the North parking lot at the end of the 6th grade wing n Students may be dropped off after 7:15 AM n Students must be picked-up by 2:30PM

Special Education Services  Mrs. Cowger, Teacher Consultant (HWMS and Parker MS) (HWMS and Parker MS)  Students receiving services are encouraged and supported as they acquire knowledge, build skills and prepare for future independence  Each student is assigned a teacher case- manager who monitors progress and reports academic goals and objectives  Middle school students attend their IEP meetings

Home to School Communication n PowerSchool – Parents and students can monitor grades through PowerSchool n teachers (allow 24 hour response time) n Highlander Way Web-Site n Monthly electronic newsletters n Daily Planner use is encouraged n Parent Link-for important messages n A computer is available in Guidance

Counselors n We have two Counselors n Mrs. Haaseth (A-K) n Mrs. Chanavier (L-Z) n Course scheduling n Social and academic concerns n Facilitate Reaching Higher n Parent meetings n Mediate peer conflict n Problem-Solving strategies

Good Attendance = Good Grades n All absences must be called in by a parent or guardian n Teachers take attendance hourly and automated system calls home with unexcused absences n Please attempt to schedule appointments outside the school day and provide documentation n Excessive absences and/or tardies result in reporting to the county truancy officer and may result in disciplinary consequences

Daily Study Time = Rigor n Set up a consistent location and time n Plan at least 60 minutes per day to study at home n Avoid distractions n Ask, “What are you studying tonight?” VS. “Do you have any homework?”

Behavior Expectations = Respect  In the fall, we meet with all students at grave level assemblies to review high expectations for academics and behavior o Dress Code o Electronics and Cell Phones o Bullying/Rumors/Harassment o Horseplay o Fighting

Responsibility n Students are responsible for making positive choices n HWMS follows the HPS Code of Conduct n Grades 6 – 12 follow progressive discipline process
