Review Part 1: Piaget Piaget’s Stages of Development What are Piaget’s FOUR stages of development? What is a schema? assimilation? accomodation?

Review (Stages) During this stage children are likely to play with their food (using senses and motor skills to explore and develop cognitively) What stage is this?

Sensorimotor Stage! Birth to age 2 Beginning of the stage child also lacks object permanence (understanding that things continue to exist even when not seen, heard, or felt) wAQ wAQ

Review-Stages During this stage there are still several limits such as egocentric thinking (unable to consider another’s point of view), and conservation. What stage is this?

Preoperational Stage! Ages 2 to 7 Yg Yg vg vg

Review (Stages) Less “egocentric” but still cannot think abstractly and hypothetically What stage is this?

Concrete Operational Stage! Ages 7-11 Limits: – Cannot think abstractly and hypothetically – Thinking tied to concrete, tangible objects and events Abilities – Can perform “operations” on concrete objects – Understands conservation (that changes in shape or appearance can be reverse) – Less egocentric – Can think logically about concrete objects and events –

Review (Stages) Stage characterized by the development of abstract systems of thought that allow them to use prepositional logic, scientific reasoning, and proportional reasoning.

Formal Operational Stage Adolescents -- usually at age 11-plus -- are able to logically use symbols related to abstract concepts, such as algebra and science. They can think about multiple variables in systematic ways, formulate hypotheses, and consider possibilities. They also can ponder abstract relationships and concepts such as justice. Although Piaget believed in lifelong intellectual development, he insisted that the formal operational stage is the final stage of cognitive development, and that continued intellectual development in adults depends on the accumulation of knowledge.

Review Part 2- Vygotsky Recall what we learned about Vygotsky How did his theory differ from Piaget?

Vygotsky What is Scaffolding? …ZPD? …Guided practice?

A scaffold is a temporary framework that is put up for support and access to meaning and taken away as needed when the child secures control of success with a task. A construct that is critical for scaffolding instruction is Vygotsky's concept of the zone of proximal development (ZPD).

The zone of proximal development, often abbreviated as ZPD, is the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can do with help.

Guided participation is a process through which an experienced person helps another person who has less experience to become competent in practices that are personally and socially meaningful practices of everyday life.

Review Part 3 Degrees of Attachment What is attachment? What are the four degrees of attachment (found by Mary Ainsworth and later Mary Main)?

Attachment: a strong affectional bond with special others that endures over time.

1.Secure- seeks closeness w/ mother when stranger enters. Uses her as a safe base from which to explore, shows moderate distress when she is gone, it happy when she returns. 2.Anxious/ambivalent- Infant becomes very upset when mother leaves the room and shows mixed emotions when she returns 3.Anxious/avoidant- infant does not seek closeness or contact with the mother and shows little emotion when the mother departs or returns 4.Disorganized/ disoriented- infant exhibits avoidant or ambivalent attachment, often seeming either confused or apprehensive in the presence of the mother.

What is your attachment style Google: attachment style quiz 30 questions (should get the following link) SKIP THIS IF NOT ENOUGH TIME! About Psych Attachment Quiz

Parenting Styles What are the four main parenting styles? What are some effects of these parenting styles on the children? Which parenting style generally corresponds to the “best” outcome?

Permissive Neglectful Permissive Indulgent Authoritative Authoritarian

Permissive-Neglectful Effect: children tend to have poor social skills and little self control (overly demanding and disobedient)

Permissive Indulgent Effects: children tend to lack self-reliance and self-control. They have difficulty understanding limits set by others (significant adults) later on.

Review Part 4 Review Erikson’s 8 stages

Review Part 5 Define sex, gender, and gender roles?

Gender = the psychological and social dimension of being female or male Sex= the presence of male or female anatomy Gender roles = sets of expectations on how females or males should act, think, or feel
