Writing 1 The Second Semester Presented by Dr. Mohamed Sha’at

Objectives of the Session Students are expected to: - Discuss the assignment. -Compare the writing style of three paragraphs. -List the main features of a good title. -Rewrite some sentences correctly. -Write a short connected paragraph describing someone.

Write a short paragraph that describes the process of making falafel sandwich.

An Activity Write a short paragraph which gives useful directions to make a falafel sandwich. To make falafel sandwich you should follow the following steps. Take a loaf of bread. Cut it into two slices. Spread three to four pieces of falafel on the bread. Wash the cucumber and tomatoes, cut them into thin slices, and put them over the falafel. You can add slices of pickles and pepper if you like as they give the sandwich an extra zing.

Four Features of a Paragraph, p.10: 1- A paragraph has a topic sentence that states the main idea. 2- All of the sentences in the paragraph are about one topic. 3- The first line of a paragraph is indented. 4- The last sentence brings the paragraph to a logical conclusion. It states the main point again or summarizes the main idea of the paragraph. Invite students to read paragraph 4 pp to underline: A- The topic sentence. B- A sentence which does not relate to the main idea. C- The conclusion sentence. Students should read the whole paragraphs in unit 1.

Revision of the Previous Meeting 1- What is the function of the topic sentence? The topic sentence is the foundation for the paragraph. It states the main idea of a paragraph. 2- What is the name of the last sentence in a paragraph? List its function? The last sentence in a paragraph is the concluding sentence. It states the main point again or it summarizes the main idea of the paragraph. Also, it can offer a prediction or a suggestion. 3- What are the name of the other types of sentences in a paragraph? They are the supporting sentences which illustrate the paragraph’s main idea and make it clear and vivid to the readers.

The Title of a Paragraph, p.20 A title tells you what you will find in the text. It is usually very short and catches the reader interest. Note that the title does not tell everything about the paragraph. Consider the titles and their notes p. 20. Go through language focus p. 22. In addition, discuss activity 14 p. 25. Write a simple paragraph that describes a person you know.

Khalid is an old man in his mid sixties. His face is thin and wrinkled. His hair is short and graying and his eyebrows are bushy. On the other hand Nora, his sister, is in her late twenties. She has straight fair hair, round, blue eyes and a turned up nose. She is approximately 1.7 meters tall.
