Purpose of First Year Advising Program Students are more likely to do well in their first semester, continue to the next semester, and eventually reach their educational goals if they complete certain advising related activities with an assigned advisor. This success course along with the required advising will help you gain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college. Several activities will be assigned to you as part of the advising process and are designed with your success in mind. Overview of Advising Activities Complet e Activity:Timeframe: Attend Advising Session 1 (in-class or one- on-one) Week If needed: complete the Advising degree plan Worksheet (PDF) from Learning Web page. Week Review iAAR (interactive advisement report) 2 week before final exam Complete Academic Planner 2 week before final exam Attend Advising Session 2 2 week before final exam Students enrolled in a student success course (EDUC 1301, LEAD, 1370, HPRS 1201, or ENGR 1201) are responsible for completing the advising activities listed below. Students will not be permitted to register for future semesters until all requirements are complete.

Student Responsibilities The following is a list of expectations from you, the student, throughout the required advising process:  Schedule and attend advising appointments and come prepared with questions.  Be an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience.  Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.  Organize official documents and keep a record of your progress.  Follow through on all assignments and referrals.  Clarify personal values and goals.  Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies, procedures, and campus resources.  Accept responsibility for decisions.

Description of Advising Activities First Advising Session: This session will be offered in the classroom or may be scheduled as a one-on-one session as needed. Several meeting options such as virtual online meetings will be offered to students enrolled in online classes.  The First Advising Session will cover:  Review results and discuss degree plan options.  Discuss programs of study and career choice.  Review how to read/use your iAAR and Academic Planner.  Discuss important items on the academic calendar  Overview of campus resources

Second Advising Session:  This session must be a one-on-one advising meeting with your assigned senior advisor. You must make an appointment to meet with your assigned senior advisor and you must complete the activities below prior to your meeting.   Under special circumstances and for distance education students, your advisor may make arrangements to meet with you via virtual meeting such using a web platform such as Skype. Before your Second Advising Session, student must complete: Confirm Accuracy of Program Plan and Review iAAR ( Degree Plan ):  Ensure that the program plan (major) listed in the student system at HCC is correct.  Continue to become familiar with and actively use the iAAR (Interactive Academic Advisement Report) as online degree plan and guide Academic Planner ( Map ):  Complete the Academic Planner through in the HCC Student System.  The planner is a strategy that creates a semester by semester guideline for each course that you will need to complete for your degree/certificate.

The Second Advising Session will cover:  Review completion of the Academic Planner for accuracy.  Review of academic progress.  Discuss registration for next term including financial aid and scholarship deadlines.  Provide resources and campus referrals as needed

Student Learning Outcomes  The following is a list of what you can expect to learn as part of the required advising process:  Students will demonstrate the ability to make effective decisions concerning their degree and career goals.  Students will develop an educational plan for successfully achieving their goals which includes understanding the Interactive Academic Advising Report (iAAR) and planning future course enrollment through the Academic Planner.  Students will become familiar with the information and functions within their student account.  Students will become familiar with student policies and procedures.  Students will become familiar with and utilize campus resources and services to assist in achieving academic, personal, and career goals.

Advisor Responsibilities The following is a list of expectations of your advisor throughout the required advising process:  Understand and effectively communicate the curriculum, graduation requirements, and college policies and procedures.  Encourage and guide students to develop realistic academic and career goals.  Support students to gain the skills necessary to develop clear and attainable educational plans.  Educate students on strategies for utilizing available resources and services on campus.  Assist in understanding the benefits of higher education and its impact on lives.  Monitor and accurately document students’ progress toward meeting their goals.  Be accessible during office hours by appointment, telephone or e- mail.  Assist students to develop decision making skills and assume responsibility for actions.  Maintain confidentiality pursuant to FERPA.
