1 Online Orientation for Spring Term Freshmen Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences!

2 Welcome to the Advising Center The Advising Center: Consists of 24 full-time academic advisors, a Director, two Assistant Directors, and three support staff. Serves students Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Advisors : Assist students in defining academic and career goals, making academic plans, and addressing any academic problems or difficulties. Inform students of rules, regulations, procedures, majors, programs, and course offerings, as well as campus-wide sources of support and information. Meet individually with students at least once per term for one-on-one advising. We look forward to meeting you, helping you discover and/or refine your goals, and working with you as you journey toward your future.

4 Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences Graduation Requirements Every student must complete a minimum of: 120 units/credits Those 120 credits will be comprised of : General Education Requirements Major Requirements Related Area Requirements Electives The overall GPA must be: 2.0 Minimum

5 Majors, Minors, and Related Areas Students must: 1. Complete the requirements of a major of their choice 2. Complete the requirements for ONE of the following: A Related Area (12 units/credits in any one Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences department outside of chosen major) A Minor (15-19 units/credits) A Certificate (18-24 units/credits) You can view a listing of each of these items here.here

6 Students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for each term of enrollment. Students whose GPA falls below 2.0 will be placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation whose GPA continues to fall below the minimum after their next term of enrollment will be subject to suspension or dismissal. After being suspended, students are not eligible to re-enroll for one calendar year. Students are also required to fulfill the algebra and the composition requirements within the first year of enrollment. Academic Standards Policy

7 Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Studies uses a two-tier advising process. You will be assigned a Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences undergraduate advisor until you have officially declared a major or have been accepted into a professional school. This generally happens during or after your sophomore year. After you declare your major, you will be assigned to an advisor in your major or professional school. The Advising Process

8 Other Campus Resources In addition to academic advisors, there are a lot of people on campus that are here to help you in many different ways! Academic Resource Center Academic Resource Center (ARC)—The ARC provides study skill workshops and tutoring. The staff members can assist you with academic development and guide you to academic success. The Writing Center and Math Assistance Center (MAC) also offer valuable support.The Writing Center Math Assistance Center Office of Freshman ProgramsOffice of Freshman Programs—Staff members in this office offer a course (FP 0001: Introduction to Arts and Sciences) for freshmen who are transitioning to the University. You may also enroll in FP 0003, which is Introduction to Arts and Sciences combined with Seminar in Composition. Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (OUR)— The OUR connects Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences undergraduates with opportunities to earn credits outside the classroom by engaging in research activities that are directly tied to current coursework.

9 Other Campus Resources (cont.) … Career Development and Placement Assistance Office Career Development and Placement Assistance Office (CDO)—The CDO will guide you in making important decisions about your future. The career consultants there will work with you in all stages of career development. Student Health Services Student Health Services (SHS)—The medical staff at SHS are committed to helping you maintain overall wellness. They provide medical care and offer programs to promote personal health. University Counseling Center University Counseling Center —The Counseling Center provides personal and academic counseling to nearly 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The Center is staffed by psychologists, counselors, social workers, a psychiatrist, and pre-doctoral interns, and the services rendered to students are free and confidential.

10 Preparing For Your Appointment Before you arrive for your advising appointment be sure you: Have completed any necessary placement examsplacement exams Have reviewed the Course Descriptions Web page (instructions on following slides) Have reviewed information about various majors, minors, and certificates available at the University of Pittsburgh Things to bring to your advising appointment: A list of any coursework in progress Your username and password for my.pitt.edumy.pitt.edu You can contact the Help Desk if you have questions about this.Help Desk AP and/or IB credit reports A list of courses that interest you

11 Choosing Courses The Course Descriptions Web page is the best tool you can use to find courses that are being offered and what they are all about. You can search by subject using the drop down box and selecting the correct term code.
