Business and Communication Systems TRAINING GCSE Business and Communication Systems

Business and Communication Systems Learning Intentions Demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of the reasons for staff training: −Induction −To explain a change in procedures −To become more competitive −To introduce new ICT systems Evaluate on-the-job training and off-the-job training and justify the more appropriate method of training for particular circumstances

Business and Communication Systems Reasons for Training Induction – this is the training given to employees when they start a new job To explain a change in procedures – so employees are familiar with new ways of doing things To become more competitive – a better trained workforce will be more efficient and therefore the firm should become more competitive To introduce new ICT systems – employees will need training to ensure they stay up to date and can use technology effectively and efficiently

Business and Communication Systems Benefits and Importance of Training Cope with changes in technology Update employees skills More efficient and effective workforce Fewer accidents Improved quality of products/services Motivates employees Less supervision of workers needed Better opportunities for promotion

Business and Communication Systems Drawbacks of Training Training programmes can be expensive Employees often need time off work to attend Risk losing employees to competitors Higher wages

Business and Communication Systems Training On-the-Job Internal courses Work shadowing Role play Off-the-Job Lectures External courses Demonstrations at training centres etc

Business and Communication Systems On-the-job Training Advantages Training is specific and matches the needs of the organisation Generally cheaper than off- the-job training Workers may still be productive while training Employees more relaxed in their own surroundings Disadvantages Inconsistent May pick up bad habits Normal working patterns disturbed Doesn’t usually lead to a qualification

Business and Communication Systems Off-the-job Training Advantages Since training is carried out by specialists it is usually of higher quality May lead to a qualification Employees are trained away from their place of work so any mistakes will not impact on customers Employees have the opportunity to meet people from other organisations and can exchange ideas. They may also be introduced to new equipment, they can bring this experience back to their own place of work Some training may take place through evening classes which means that they do not miss their work and this reduces cost Disadvantages Training may not be specifically related to an individual firm’s needs Equipment/tools used may not be the same as that used in the business Causes disruption to normal work patterns as employees may need time off Training can be more expensive due to the costs taking part in a training course and time off work
