Curriculum Leadership Council Elementary Mathematics Break-Out Session November 21, 2013

Outcomes Understand how cooperative logic tasks can be used in the elementary grades Discover on-line resources that can be used to support the implementation of the CCSS-M. Continue to create unit maps based on the Pearson Foundation Scope and Sequence.

Agenda Cooperative Logic On-line Resources Unit Mapping

COOPERATIVE LOGIC Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice and Math Discourse

CCSS Mathematical Practices OVERARCHING HABITS OF MIND 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 6. Attend to precision REASONING AND EXPLAINING 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others MODELING AND USING TOOLS 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically SEEING STRUCTURE AND GENERALIZING 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Cooperative Logic Tasks

Cooperative Logic Problems Developed by EQUALS at Lawrence Hall of Science Math is accessible to every student Changing the standing of teachers Opportunity for each student to learn at his/her maximum potential

Cooperative Logic Problems Promote use of mathematical language and discourse Encourage students to persist Meaningful resource to use if beginning group work or for experienced group workers

Behavioral Norms for Cooperative Logic Problems Follow the rules of the activity. Everybody is to participate Listen to what others say Help others without telling them what to do or giving answers Ask others for their opinions Ask for help when you need it Try to give mathematical reasons for what you say Everyone is responsible for finding the solution

Cooperative Logic Rules Pass out the clue cards. You will be working in groups of four. When you get your clue, you may only look at your own clue. You may not look at anyone else’s. You may share your clue by telling others what is on it, but you may not show it to anyone else.

Cooperative Logic Sets Find the Dinosaur, Ice Cream, Pond- (primary) Build It! (grade 4 and up) Mystery Number (grade 4 and up)

Cooperative Logic Small Group Discussion When finished, discuss in your group… Which clue was the most helpful? Why? Could any clue be eliminated? Why or Why not? Did you solve this problem in more than one way?

Cooperative Logic Debrief Whole Group How did your group represent the information? Did you use manipulatives/resources? If so, how did you use them? Did they help? What mathematical knowledge did you need to solve the problem?

CCSS Mathematical Practices OVERARCHING HABITS OF MIND 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 6. Attend to precision REASONING AND EXPLAINING 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others MODELING AND USING TOOLS 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically SEEING STRUCTURE AND GENERALIZING 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

ON-LINE RESOURCES

CCSS-Mathematics Illustrative Mathematics Kansas Flip Books Common Core Conversations

Illustrative Mathematics Illustrative Mathematics provides guidance to states, assessment consortia, testing companies, and curriculum developers by illustrating the range and types of mathematical work that students experience in a faithful implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and by publishing other tools that support implementation of the standards.

Illustrative Mathematics 3.MD. The Square Counting Shortcut – SMP: Constructing Viable Arguments and Critiquing the Reasoning of Others

Illustrative Mathematics Go to your grade level and review the resources. How could this resource support your implementation of the CCSS-M?

Kansas Flip Books =5646 These resources were developed by the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics (KATM) and make links between the mathematical practices and the content of the Common Core Standards. They include instructional strategies and examples for each standard at each grade level.
