1 Standards for Mathematical Practice
COMMON CORE Standards for Mathematical Practice Michelle White, Executive Director Department of Mathematics and Science Office of Academics and Transformation Annie Klian, District Instructional Supervisor Helen Brown, District Curriculum Support Specialist Shelley Werner, District Curriculum Support Specialist

2 STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE
Overarching Habits of Mind Productive Math Thinker (1) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them (6) Attend to precision Reasoning and Explaining (2) Reason abstractly and quantitatively (3) Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Modeling and Using Tools (4) Model with mathematics (5) Use appropriate tools strategically Seeing Structure and Generalizing (7) Look for and make use of structure (8) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Here are the standards of mathematical practice laid out in a way that classifies them as much as possible. Each group has 8 cards. Each card matches one of the standards of mathematical practice as it appears in the classroom. Try to match the card with the standard. Each group will also get one large card. After you match the cards, each group will come up and put their one large card under the correct standard. Let’s try and see how we do. 2

3 GROUP ACTIVITY Each group will receive:
An envelope containing 8 small cards and a handout of the listed mathematical practices: A large handout for each of the 8 practices. Instructions: Match each of the 8 small cards with its mathematical practice (using the handout of the listed mathematical practices). Hold up the large card for the practice when asked as we review each one. Here are the standards of mathematical practice laid out in a way that classifies them as much as possible. Each group has 8 cards. Each card matches one of the standards of mathematical practice as it appears in the classroom. Try to match the card with the standard. Each group will also get a set of 8 large cards – one for each practice. When we review each one, hold up the correct card for the practice! 3

4 GROUP ACTIVITY Each group will receive:
An envelope containing 8 small cards and a handout of the listed mathematical practices: A one page handout of what the practice looks like in the classroom. Instructions: Match each of the 8 small cards with its mathematical practice (using the handout of the listed mathematical practices. Each group will place their one large card under the matching practice on the chart paper. Here are the standards of mathematical practice laid out in a way that classifies them as much as possible.
