1 Understanding the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice
“If the Standards for Mathematical Practice are not in place, well then, your not really using the Common Core” – Phil Daro, Common Core author - Mathematics Understanding the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice

2 Think about a few students who are “really good” in math.
“Good Math Students” Think about a few students who are “really good” in math. How do they approach problems? How do they solve problems? How do they discuss their strategies?

3 Mathematical Practices
Look at the 8 standards for mathematical practice Highlight the first 3 words of each paragraph What do you notice? Each starts with “mathematically Proficient Students

4 Mathematical Practices
The Standards for Mathematical Practices describe the behaviors of mathematically proficient students.

5 Standards for Mathematical Practice
Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

6 Use appropriate tools strategically.
Practice # 5 Mathematically proficient students… Use appropriate tools strategically. Read the standard – on a post-it, jot down what this standard means “in a nutshell”

7 Use appropriate tools strategically.
Practice # 5 Mathematically proficient students… Use appropriate tools strategically. When everyone is finished, pass your post-its around the room.

8 Use appropriate tools strategically.
Practice # 5 Mathematically proficient students… Use appropriate tools strategically. Now read the Unpacking for Practice #5

9 Practice # 5 As a teacher, how do I encourage students to use appropriate tools strategically?
