ENGAGING THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY THROUGH THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS Breaking barriers – breaking news With the increasing popularity of social media, Wheatlands wanted to respond to the desire for more immediate updates and images of the whole school sport offer. We saw this as a positive way to engage the wider school community. Exploring the Options – Investigating different social media - pros and cons within school context. Promotion and Engagement Initial launch, raising the profile, engaging the audience Making Links– identifying suitable organisations to follow. Parents and Children – growing number of followers, children encouraged to promote. Staff and Governors– a whole school picture, staff growing in confidence, overview for governors. Wider Community Links– SSP, Secondary Schools, YST, School Games retweeting. Involvement – Sports Crew and other pupils to tweet. Staff Development – expand to each teacher and class tweeting regularly. Sustainable Links – raise awareness via local media eg. ST BEDE’S PRIMARY CATHOLIC VOLUNTARY ACADEMY PRESENTS OUR ‘SPORTS CREW’ ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS Sports Crews are about giving the children a voice about Sport in your school. It gives children the opportunity to lead and take ownership of Sport. Why set up a Sports Crew? How are Sports Crews used to involve all children with ranging abilities in school? The process of setting up a Sports Crew. Sports Crew meetings held fortnightly to; gain feedback, reflect, plan and implement ideas to move forward. To take responsibility of supporting PE lessons, competitions through the year and blogging. Feedback from staff, pupils and parents from questionnaires and social media. Gold award Sports Crew leaders have given all age groups a voice and a way to show case talents. Planning for Sports week, days and competitions. Using the Sports Crew to develop the next group coming through in Year 5 in order to sustain the program. Supporting and leading other schools within our Academy in setting up a Sports Crew.

EFFECTIVELY ASSESSING & TRACKING “PHYSICAL LITERACY” SKILLS IN PE WITHOUT LEVELS ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS The development of “Physical Literacy” splits PE attainment into physical skills, thinking skills and social/emotional skills. Can we design and introduce a system to assess pupil skills in these areas, across the PE strands without the use of levels? Can we use it to identify gaps and improve? Grouping PE objectives into physical, thinking, social and emotional skills. Determining a simple “assessing without levels” grading system. To design and implement an effective electronic tracker system to monitor attainment. More focussed PE objectives across all strands and skill types. Now able to assess pupils and cohorts simply to access a wide range of data. Analysis easily informs future planning, school improvement plans and CPD requirements. Implementing the system across the Loftus and Brotton cluster. Providing INSET for any schools who feel they require it. Support school staff with analyzing attainment to determine strengths and areas of development.

THE PEDOMETER CHALLENGE: LINKING ACTIVITY WITH THE CLASSROOM ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS We want children more active! If we highlight and record steps by introducing the wearing of pedometers to children and link it to a classroom topics can we encourage children to have a greater awareness of their day to day activity? Year 5 children were provided with pedometers Baseline steps were recorded followed by a 5 week programme of cross curriculum intervention. Whole class results were used each week to track the distance covered on a map. All children in the class increased their levels of activity over the 5 weeks As the scores and results were collectively used no one felt left out. Children became aware of their own levels of activity Should classroom lessons be more active? Does the information of steps counted as an individual or as a group help to increase activity? Is it a way of highlighting the importance of activity to all Year 5 and Year 6 children? LITERACY AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION – ENGAGING CHILDREN THROUGH SPORT ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS How can PE and School Sport be used to engage children in literacy? Is it possible to use literacy to promote a positive attitude towards PE and sport – and vice versa? Could literacy have a competitive element? AIM: To boost literacy and engage more children in school sport opportunities. SSP Competition – Schools sent guidelines on what to write about and information on how to enter. Themed – Different theme and new competition every half term. School Games Format – Children compete at Level 1, and then qualify for Level 2. Improving Writing – Children write about something they are passionate about. Confidence – Children gain self esteem through the recognition of their work. Profile of PE – Raise the profile of PE across the whole school, among both children and staff. Cross-Curricular – Use the power of PE to inspire children in other areas. SSOC – Create a Media Leader role in the Organising Crew. Blogging – By blogging on the School Games website, children can win prizes and be proud of their work. A HEALTHY SCHOOL…WHAT ABOUT THE STAFF? - TEES VALLEY WORKPLACE CHALLENGE ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS How can we harness the enthusiasm for sport and fitness amongst current staff? What are the opportunities to participate together? Is it possible to encourage others without alienating them? Not so much actions as good things to do… Talk about sporting and fitness interests with colleagues and children; part of the culture Organise a staff fitness event Sign up for the Tees Valley Workplace Challenge 125 staff taking part in a Darlington-wide staff relay Greater staff participation in running and fitness: entering own events; joined running club; own staff running group High sign-up to Workplace Challenge website/activity tracker Involving a whole new staff and maintaining interest in the Workplace Challenge Not alienating the reluctant participators, the private participators and those who shun competition Organising a follow-up town-wide event.

ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS What is a blog? Benefits of blogging. Why should you blog? Who should blog? Set up sports crew. Use as part of everyday/weekly routine. Be aware of the competitions and opportunities. Supports evidence. Inclusion. Recognition. Rewards. Inspire others to start. Continue to encourage the younger children. Going for Gold!!

CLAVERING PRIMARY SCHOOL: COMPETITIVE SPORT FOR ALL! ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS Limited opportunities = limited success. Previously, Clavering offered a very limited PE curriculum, minimal inter-school opportunities and zero intra- school opportunities. A new SLT saw PE and Sport as being an opportunity to help transform the school on and off the sports field. 1. PE: transformed the Clavering Curriculum for PE for breadth and quality, up- skilling all teachers. 2. Inter-school: ensured that Clavering children are actively involved (and successful) in inter-school sport. 3. Intra-school: implemented whole school opportunities for intra-school sport. 1. PE: pupils now study over 20 different sports. 2. Inter-school: the school competes in at least 14 sports and at least 90% of pupils represent the school. 3. Intra-school opportunities: 100% of pupils now participate in intra-school sport within a whole-school progressive model. 1. Kitemarks: continue to use the ‘School Games Mark’ and the ‘Youth Sport Trust Kitemark’ to evaluate provision in PE, sport and active lifestyles. 2. Staff CPD: continue to up- skill teachers in all key stages. 3. Pupil leadership: continue to develop the role of the SGOC and Sports Leaders.

LIFESTYLE LEADERSHIP ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS The Governments focus on sport in schools is shown by their funding to all schools to increase participation to all Lifestyle Leadership is a great way in which to engage pupils of all ages and abilities Give ALL pupils the opportunity to attend extra curricular activity Focus on the ‘less active’ pupils. Keep track of participation Create a positive and fun atmosphere at the club Increase participation throughout school in extra curricular activities Increase in other extra curricular attendances Pupils value and enjoy physical activity Registers and Data Create a wide variety of clubs throughout the year and target particular pupils. Update participation data Apply for Sainsbury’s School Games Mark Gold

NATIONAL SPORTS WEEK AT ST AIDAN’S C OF E MEMORIAL PRIMARY SCHOOL ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS Sports Week? Why we have Sports Week? What our sports week is? When is it? Who’s involved? All the Sporting activities we do during sports week, past and present. How the school young leaders are involved. Looking at the sporting needs of the school when planning sports week. More pupils attending sports club at school and local community clubs. New experiences Evidence in achieving GOLD Sports mark. To sustain a high level of enjoyment and participation in a range of sports. Giving pupils new sporting expectances, with links to community clubs. To promote future aspirations for young pupils.

ESKDALE ACADEMY HAS RECEIVED THE SSG GOLD AWARD FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS! ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS Since the introduction of School Sport funding Eskdale Academy’s PE has gone from strength to strength. Before this our school competed in many competitions but rarely won. PE was seen as more for enjoyment and wasn’t really impacting anywhere else in school. Employed a Sports Coach to deliver one session of PE a week for all year groups. Provided Pupils with a choice of PE related after school clubs every night of the week. Set aside curriculum time to coach GAT and teams separately. More children are engaged in sporting related activities in and out of school. Began winning more competitions, even regionals and the profile of PE grew. Behaviour improved and more children want to be part of PE developments. Continue to publish sporting achievements in weekly Newsletter and on website. Continue to use pupil voice when organising after school clubs, sports days and inter school competitions. Continue to monitor performance and impact PE has across school.
