TOBACCO Brainstorm a list of several reasons that teenagers give to start smoking:

Reason why TEENS smoke To ‘fit in’ - it’s a status thing To get back at parents Their role models do it To manage distress To look ‘cool’ It’s ‘something to do’

The three “components” present when smoking tobacco are nicotine, tar, and CO. Identify several characteristics for each: Nicotine: highly addictive stimulant increases heart rate, BP, breathing rates constricts blood passageways makes blood passage ways hard/brittle (not flexible) releases endorphins into bloodstream all tobacco products contain nicotine extremely challenging to quit; many are not successful…

The three “components” present when smoking tobacco are nicotine, tar, and CO. Identify several characteristics for each: Tar: sticky, brown, (sometimes hot) substance highly carcinogenic (cancer causing) provides taste to the product destroys cilia in bronchial tubes Roughly 87% of all cancer deaths are related to tar causes both COPD’s (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) (chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema) Leukoplakia: caused by using SMOKELESS TOBACCO products White, leathery patch in the oral cavity precancerous

The three “components” present when smoking tobacco are nicotine, tar, and CO. Identify several characteristics for each: Carbon Monoxide (CO) an odorless, colorless, tasteless GAS is released when tobacco is smoked (pipe, cigar, cigarette) DEADLY attaches to RBC’s 245 times more easily than O2 easily forces O2 off RBC’s and CO ‘takes over’ causes upset stomach, nausea, fainting/passing out, and brain damage

Identify the two COPD’s and explain how they develop: Chronic Bronchitis tar destroys cilia in bronchial tubes by burning them or clumping them together mucous collects in bronchial tubes smoker will have severe coughing fits not treatable! Unless, the smoker QUITS Pulmonary Emphysema alveoli (air sacs) are destroyed by tar and burst open, allowing the lung to eventually collapse causes a significant lack of breathable air space patient uses 80% of their energy to breathe

Brainstorm a list of ill effects that tobacco products have on a person’s health: causes heart disease (stroke, aneurysm, heart attack, cardiac arrest, high BP, etc…) stains skin/teeth; bad breath causes addiction destroys taste buds (dulled) causes premature wrinkles and aging causes a variety of cancers (specifically lung, digestive system and excretory system cancers) causes both COPD’s weakened immune system

What are the major effects that tobacco products have on an unborn baby causes babies to have low birth weights; born prematurely and even stillborn; spontaneous miscarriage some babies will not grow to potential in adulthood constricts blood vessels/CO to baby’s brain causes babies to be born with: deformities and LD’s higher risk of SIDS, ear infections, respiratory infections and asthmatic attacks Second hand smoke slows lung development causing children to have weaker lung function overall

What rights do non-smokers have? What health situations can smokers cause on non-smokers? Non-Smoker’s Rights: the right to breathe clean air Health situation risks for second hand smokers: every single risk that smoker’s are exposed to  Unfortunately, many deaths are caused by second hand smoke (most are cancer/heart disease related)

List several benefits of quitting smoking: More $$ to spend! Better overall health Longevity Less doctor visits overall Significant decrease risk of heart disease and cancer Everyday tasks are easier to preform Exercise more easily Easier to be a part of a team
