Bridging the Generation Gap Through Stories Aro Muttilainen Oliphant Sammander Sen

What is our service? Helps to bridge the generation gap through shared memories and stories. Multi-tiered UI to encompass various user types. Secure – allows the individuals to have complete control over who their memories stories are shared with.

3 Scenarios Advanced UI – Performance Based (Mockup Site) Intermediate UI – Textual Assisted UI – Video

Advanced UI Scenario (Performance Based Mockup Site) The story is about a mature individual who is experienced with social media services and is interested to try the free service where he can find stories by his family and create ones of his own to share with them. These interactions include: Browsing stories from the service. Finding specific stories from the service. Content creation in the form of memories and stories.

Elements Setting: The person, their computer in his home. Agent: Individual who is experienced with other web-based social media services and their functions. Goals: – Easily access stories shared by other family members. – Browse for interesting content in the service. – Search for particular content while creating and sharing his own content. – Communicate and connect with family members through the use of stories. – Learn about family history. Tasks: Find stories of interest easily and quickly while easily being able to create content. Plot: Individual browses for content the service recommends to him and searches family vacation stories. User creates his own content using built in functionality of the site. Advanced UI Scenario

Goals, Context, or Activity A person is at home with his computer using this system because he: wants to communicate and connect with the rest of their family members through the use of stories and to learn about his family history. The interaction will be successful if he: is able to easily create / share content, navigate the site, and access stories shared by other family members. Advanced UI Scenario

Interaction The interface helps with creating, finding and browsing content by: Having a UI that is easy to understand and navigate and allow for easy content creation while at the same time offer services similar or better than competitors’ services. Containing an intelligent search mechanism that is designed for finding past events quickly. It provides the user with a browsing platform where the system automatically suggests interesting content. Advanced UI Scenario

Analysis / Results The user is able to easily create content. They are able to communicate with their friends and family via this system. The user returns to use the service because it offers personal and interesting content easily that is not available anywhere else. It is successful because the technology exists, the metaphor is familiar with our target group, which makes the system easy to use and highly intuitive. Advanced UI Scenario

Intermediate UI Scenario (Textual Scenario) The story is about an individual who is computer literate, enjoys watching documentaries and videos on YouTube, but hasn't found a simple and secure way to share stories of his own. The user's interactions include: Telling a story through text and video, then storing and sharing it with family members and/or others. Browsing other users' memories. Intermediate UI Scenario

Elements Setting: The person, recently retired, on their computer at home, far away from grandchildren who live abroad. Agent: Individual who is computer literate (and has used at work since the 90s and lately to connect with his grandchildren), but is not excited about learning new services. doesn't work because cannot type long text (because of arthritis and eyes that tire quickly). Goals: Telling a story through text and video, then storing and sharing it with family members and/or others. Tasks: Interacts with the system through typing and recording video. Plot: Individual browses others' videos, creates a video memory, then shares it with his family through and online with all Epooq users. Intermediate UI Scenario

Goals, Context, or Activity A person is at home with his computer using this system because he: received a video memory from one of his old colleagues, and has read/watched tutorials on the service site would like to communicate and connect with the rest of their family members through the use of stories, even to spark real-life conversation wants to store his videos in a safe and permanent destination for family members to watch after he's gone, because he understands feels that his family maybe to busy for him or may have forgotten him. This interaction will be successful if the system if: it is quick and simple enough to learn in under an hour trust exists that the personal history will be safe and retrievable decades from now confidence is built in using the system and help exists if needed. he sees the service's functions before trying it by himself It is easy to upload the videos without problem Initial experiences go smoothly and makes the user feel like he also wants to contribute feedback after uploading the first video, either from his peers or from his family members (for gaining confidence that someone out there is watching and enjoying the uploaded videos). a feeling of control – of having fun while leaving a mark on the world Intermediate UI Scenario

Interaction The system gives the user the ability to interact with the system easily by: easy login option to see what others are sharing having a limited amount of options simple recording and re-recording of video sharing the memory and knowing exactly who it is shared with. logging out, waiting for feedback from others Intermediate UI Scenario

Analysis / Results Through successful results of the interaction, the user can: relive his memories and feel hopeful about the memories living on after he's gone. feel a sense of belonging to the current information society by being able to successfully upload a video online and participate in a lively online community. enjoy thinking about the years gone by, and by sharing his stories he himself remembers more about them. feel that the service is giving him a reason to make sense of his life and why or how things have happened. feel his memory being refreshed. talk with his family members about the experience he has shared Intermediate UI Scenario

Assisted UI Scenario (Video Performance) The story is about an individual who is computer illiterate or has some disability and their interactions with the system. These interactions include: Telling a story through pictures, audio, and video. Then storing and sharing it with family members and/or others.

Elements Setting: The person, their computer in his home. Agent: Individual who is computer illiterate or has some disability. Goals: Telling a story through pictures, audio, and video. Then storing and sharing it with family members and/or others. Tasks: Interact with the system through audio and visual command and feedback. Plot: Individual creates an audio story including an image and shares it with his family. Assisted UI Scenario

Goals, Context, or Activity A person at home with his computer using the system: to communicate and connect with the rest of their family members through the use of stories. they need assistance, have a lack of knowledge, or have a disability and is willing to pay for the assistance necessary to help him / her to accomplish the most basic tasks. The interaction is successful because: he is able to comfortably communicate with the computer program using human-human interaction as a metaphor. it performs as they would expect it to. Assisted UI Scenario

Interaction The new design helps to solve the specific problem of having a disability or the lack of knowledge by giving the individual a means to easily interact with the system. End user: Blind - Audio Command / Feedback Hearing Impaired - Give Visual Commands and Visual Feedback. Can't Talk -Visual Commands \ Visual Feedback \ Text Input Lack of Knowledge - Human-Human Interaction Metaphor Assisted UI Scenario

Please see Interaction Video included on CD/DVD.

Analysis / Results The person is able to successfully: and comfortably communicate with the computer program using human-human interaction as a metaphor. communicate with their friends and family via this system. The system was a success because the: existence and success of the technology comfortable environment created by the system ease of use of the system because the metaphor is familiar with our target group Assisted UI Scenario
