STRONGER TOGETHER Expanding Resource Sharing: Codes, Checklists and Best Practices ACRL NEC Annual Conference May 13, 2016 Manchester, NH Sue Kaler, Interlibrary Loan Manager Tressa Santillo, Resource Sharing Librarian

STRONGER TOGETHER Overview ILL Code ALA RUSA STARS Checklist RRSI Barriers to Resource Sharing Best Practices

STRONGER TOGETHER ILL Code The Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States Is revised by the Codes, Guidelines, & Technical Standards Committee of RUSA’s STARS section every seven years with input from practitioners in the field and approval from RUSA and from STARS

STRONGER TOGETHER The Code Is voluntary and gives a common understanding of ILL practices among libraries in the United States Is superseded by local or consortial agreements Encourages international ILL which is covered by IFLA, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions

STRONGER TOGETHER The 2016 Code es/interlibraryhttp:// es/interlibrary Was modernized and updated Re-defines due date –The date the item is returned to the requesting library Encourages the widest possible lending and the least restrictive policies

STRONGER TOGETHER The ILL Code Gives a common understanding of what every Resource Sharing Department should be doing –To provide excellent service to end users –To provide excellent service to each other Is what your department should be doing if at all possible What if you want to go further?

STRONGER TOGETHER The Checklist The ALA RUSA STARS Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative STAR Checklist version 2 Is aspirational and provocative Is a list of policies and procedures that could be followed if an Interlibrary Loan Department wants to be on the cutting edge of best practices

STRONGER TOGETHER The history of the checklist The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative formed ten years ago –To promote modern ILL that met users needs and minimized barriers The white paper and the Manifesto The RRSI gives an annual Innovation Award, promotes interoperability between systems and provides the checklist to push policies to the edge

STRONGER TOGETHER Manifesto Points

STRONGER TOGETHER RRSI Is managed by an international steering committee Works in cooperation with ALA and other national associations But is an independent ad hoc group Find more details at:

STRONGER TOGETHER The Checklist version 2 Is a list of 100 possible activities or policies or procedures Is arranged to follow the Manifesto Each entry has to be possible, but many are quite challenging The checklist is meant to provoke consideration of how far you can go towards the cutting edge Checklist data

STRONGER TOGETHER Barriers to Resource Sharing (Un)Ease of Resource Sharing Share More? Sharing Locally to Globally

STRONGER TOGETHER (Un)Ease of Resource Sharing: Contact Info Contacts tab in OCLC Policies Directory Barriers –Too many contact s –No departmental –Not enough or too much information

STRONGER TOGETHER (un)Ease of Resource Sharing: Policies Directory Policies tab in Policies Directory Barriers –Outdated –Policies vs. deflections –Non-circulating vs. deflections vs. policies

STRONGER TOGETHER Share More? Loaning A/V Items Barriers –Purchased for a specific non-ILL purpose –Increased postage; easily lost in the mail –Other libraries do not lend (Several do!)Several do

STRONGER TOGETHER Sharing Locally to Globally: Reciprocal Agreements Barriers –Consortial agreements only –External factors (realignment of services, inadequate staffing) –“not worth it” & “afraid we’ll get slammed”

STRONGER TOGETHER Sharing Locally to Globally International borrowing & lending Barriers –Postage, customs, and insurance –Language and local ILL culture

STRONGER TOGETHER Best Practices Pilot programs Review policies, contact information, deflections, etc. on a regular basis RUSA STARS checklistchecklist Think beyond traditional library-to-library resource sharing (ex: DPLA) Listservs, conferences, etc.
