PowerPoint Template Instructions – delete this slide! Fill in the appropriate slides. KEEP the UNDERLINED HEADINGS but change the title if instructed to do so. Delete any italicized words after you’ve added your changes! Delete slides that say, “delete this slide” when you are done. After you’ve filled out the template, then you may add themes, colors, pictures and animations. (Pictures can be very helpful in helping describe background information, materials and procedures for instance.) Remember, animations should not deter from the flow of the presentation!

PowerPoint Template Instructions – delete this slide! DUE Sunday night at 11:59 pm January 10 th on turnitin.com (bring a flash drive with it just in case!) You will be presenting in front of the class. GRAMMAR and SPELLING matters so be sure to proofread and spellcheck. You may use cards to help you present your powerpoint. PowerPoint Presentation is worth 110 pts of quarter 3 grade. Minimum font size is 24 point. Use the following slide format for pictures if needed.

Provide caption for scientific picture here Click icon above to add scientific picture. Include short explanations of pictures below in this text box. Copy this slide and insert wherever needed in the Powerpoint If not needed, delete this slide.

Insert your Science Fair Title: The Effect of (IV) on (DV) Name Period Teacher Grade Category

Rationale/Application Explain the reason your project is relevant to real life situations or society today. Who is affected by or might care about the results of this project?

Background Research Start with an attention grabber!!! At LEAST 3 paragraphs/bullet points which include definitions of terms and explanations of scientific information to help your class understand what is occurring in your experiment. Refer to your background research articles when needed and research new information if needed (don’t forget to add it to your Bibliography.)

Background Research (continued) Delete this slide if you don’t require more room!!

Research Question How does the (IV) affect the (DV)? (Use your own words and MAKE sure it is grammatically correct!!!)

Hypothesis Your hypothesis must be SPECIFIC and should include a prediction AND possible scientific explanation why that prediction was made for EVERY level of IV that you tested! It should include at least ONE in-text citation- even if it is for a concept definition from a textbook but preferably coming from someone else’s research.

Variables The independent variable for the experiment was (list IV). The levels of the independent variable were: –- The dependent variable for the experiment was (list DV) and was measured in/by (list metric units or scale used).

Variables Constants throughout the experiment were: (list at least 4 constants, starting with the most important/relevant): –- (If applicable) The control group for the experiment was (list control or describe the setup of the control).

Materials The materials should be listed, very specific, and aligned with the procedures. Include quantities. Make sure they’re in metric units. You may include pictures of your materials. You can use the picture template slide from before or create your own.

Methods Include any formulas, setting up procedures or creating of substances here that are not related to the actual testing for the experiment Also include safety guidelines and safety symbols.

Procedures Procedures should be listed with step-by-step numbers for what you actually did (NOT what you intended to do!) You should be able to visualize the experiment as you read the procedures. Include pictures if you have them! Make sure you include the metric units or scale used! No personal pronouns. Remember to indicate to repeat testing for each level (trials)

Procedures (continued) Delete this slide if it is not needed Copy this slide if there are more procedures

Insert Data Table title You should have a clearly labeled data table for this section. (Copy and paste here from Excel or Word) Copy this slide for EVERY data table you have (each table should have its own slide) Change the title of EACH slide so that it describes the actual Data Table shown. Remember that the Data Table Title should reflect the relationship between the IV and the DV that you were studying. Be sure to include a several sentence descriptive summary below the table about it (a caption).

Insert Graph title You should have a clearly labeled graph for this section. (Copy and paste here from Excel, Word or createagraph) This graph should just include your AVERAGES (not all your trials!) and as many of your IV levels as makes sense. Include one graph per slide (so copy this slide if you need more!) Rename the title of EACH slide to relate to the x and y axes of your graph. Describe the graph in several sentences below (a caption)

Analysis of Results This is NOT your conclusion! Using sentence format, describe the trend/ relationships observed in your actual data. Use actual average data for each level of your IV if you had categories. Compare differences between averages. If something was measured over time, describe the trend of the line graph. Compare rates of change. COMPARE your data to PREVIOUS data collected ELSEWHERE and include an in-text citation! (See HISEF rubric for more info.) Is your data consistent or inconsistent comparatively? Copy this slide if more room is required.

Conclusion State the answer to the original question by referring to the data (ie, “Analysis of the data revealed…” Restate your hypothesis and state whether it was supported or refuted (NEVER proven or disproven!!!) If your hypothesis was refuted, you MUST attempt to address why your original scientific explanation did not appear to have worked and offer a potential alternative explanation (you may have to do some additional research for this!)

Potential Errors Although the experiment was controlled, there were still some possible sources of error. The errors identified are: For the future, (state what may be changed to reduce or remove these errors).

Future Research 1) A possible future study could focus on (future research question the effect of IV on DV). This could be tested by (briefly explain). This would be useful to determine _____ because ______. (remove underlines and complete with your responses) 2) Another future study could focus on (future research question the effect of IV on DV). This could be tested by (briefly explain). This would be useful to determine _____ because ______. (remove underlines and complete with your responses)

References All references need to be listed (including any pictures or diagrams taken from the internet!) Minimum of 5 reputable sources should be listed but more is better. Must be in MLA format. Be careful about website formats though- BOTH the name of the ARTICLE and the WEBSITE name and URL address MUST be included!

Abstract (Use multiple slides if necessary.) The purpose of this project was to discover how the (IV) affected the (DV). This has relevance to (list who cares). Copy and paste your hypothesis. The effect of (IV) on (DV) was determined by (summarize your experiment). The results collected during this investigation were (Give average data for each level of the IV). The results showed that the hypothesis was (supported or refuted). (Next sentence only if refuted) This happened because (scientific reason why based on research). Possible errors were (list them). Future research could be (list).
