Communicable Diseases CHAPTER 13

What are Communicable Diseases? Germs and Disease You wake up feeling tired. Your nose is stuffy. Your throat is sore. You have a cold . A cold is a kind of disease.  Disease = any condition that interferes with the normal or proper functioning of the body or mind.  Communicable Disease = A disease that can be spread to a person from another person, an animal, or an object.

What are Communicable Diseases? Communicable diseases are caused by germs. Germs = organisms that are so small they can only be seen through a microscope. Germs that cause diseases are called Pathogens. Infection = A condition that happens when pathogens enter the body, multiply, and cause harm. When the body cannot fight off an infection, a disease develops.

Kinds of Pathogens There are four basic kinds of pathogens: Viruses : the smallest and simplest pathogens. Bacteria : simple one-celled organisms. Fungi : organisms that are more complex than bacteria but cannot make their own food. Protozoa : one-celled organisms that are more complex than bacteria.

Viruses The smallest and simplest pathogens.  Viruses are not alive.  Made of genetic material and protein.  Cause upper respiratory infections and other types of diseases.

Bacteria Simple one-celled organisms.  Bacteria exist in every environment on earth.  Most kinds of bacteria are not only harmless, but actually helpful!  Helpful bacteria live in your digestive system and help break down food.  Other bacteria live on your skin and prevent harmful bacteria from infecting you.  Harmful bacteria cause diseases such as strep throat and pneumonia (See full list in table)

Fungi Organisms that are more complex than bacteria but cannot make their own food. Molds, yeast, mushrooms = all examples of fungi. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments. Most are harmless, but some can cause disease.

Protozoa One-celled organisms that are more complex than bacteria. Many protozoa are harmless, but some can cause serious diseases. *See table on the next slide

Pathogens and the Diseases they Cause. PathogensDiseases Viruses Colds, chicken pox, influenza (flu), measles, mononucleosis, mumps, hepatitis, herpes, HPV, HIV, yellow fever, polio, rabies, viral pneumonia Bacteria Pinkeye, whooping cough, strep throat, tuberculosis, Lyme disease, most foodborne illnesses, bacterial pneumonia, gonorrhea FungiAthlete’s foot, ringworm ProtozoaDysentery, malaria, trichomoniasis

How Pathogens Spread  Direct Contact with others  Indirect contact with others - sneezing, coughing, sharing drinking glasses, sharing eating utensils, etc.  Contact with someone else's blood - Sharing needles (drugs, tattoo, piercings)  Sexual contact  Contact with contaminated food and water - Undercooked food, spoiled food, unwashed fruits and vegetables  Contact with animals or insects - Mosquitoes, ticks
