The Simple Sentence Expresses one idea (one subject - verb relationship). Examples: You are spreading rumors. You and Adam are spreading rumors. Subjectverb SubjectVerb
Independent Clause Same thing as the simple sentence. It can stand alone as its own sentence. An independent clause has both a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
Compound Sentence Two simple sentences put together. Examples: He ran, and I swam. He likes ice cream best, but I like cake. SVSV S V SV
Compound Sentence Has TWO independent clauses, or TWO sentences. Two sentences joined into one, using a coordinating conjunction. FANBOYS/ CONUNCTIVE ADVERBS
Complex Sentence Made up of one independent clause and one dependent clause Examples: Lewis is taking care of his nephews while his sister is in the hospital. While his sister is in the hospital, Lewis is taking care of his nephews. ICDC IC
Dependent Clause Has both a subject and a verb, but does NOT express a complete thought Often will begin with a subordinating conjunction: while, before, because When dependent clause begins the sentence, you must use a comma
