Sentence Types- Chapter Four English 0301

The Simple Sentence  Expresses one idea (one subject - verb relationship). Examples: You are spreading rumors. You and Adam are spreading rumors. Subjectverb SubjectVerb

Independent Clause  Same thing as the simple sentence.  It can stand alone as its own sentence.  An independent clause has both a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.

Compound Sentence  Two simple sentences put together. Examples: He ran, and I swam. He likes ice cream best, but I like cake. SVSV S V SV

Compound Sentence  Has TWO independent clauses, or TWO sentences.  Two sentences joined into one, using a coordinating conjunction. FANBOYS/ CONUNCTIVE ADVERBS

Complex Sentence  Made up of one independent clause and one dependent clause Examples: Lewis is taking care of his nephews while his sister is in the hospital. While his sister is in the hospital, Lewis is taking care of his nephews. ICDC IC
