2 Simple Sentence  One independent clause Formula = IC.  Can have a compound subject or a compound verb.  Ex. She breathed.  Ex. Shoshona and Raymond laughed and joked about their English assignment.

3 Compound Sentence  Two (or more) independent clauses  Formula =  IC ; IC.  IC, fanboys IC.  IC ; conjunctive adverb, IC.  She took in one long breath, yet she still didn’t feel completely at ease.

4 Complex Sentence  One independent clause and at least one dependent clause  Formula = IC + DC.  Ex. If your chest expands too much, you may not be breathing correctly.  Ex. You many not be breathing correctly if your chest expands too much.  Ex. A teacher, who knows breathing exercises, can help a person relax.

5 Compound-Complex Sentence  Two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause  Formula = IC + IC + DC.  Ex. Three sisters took yoga so that they could learn relaxation techniques, but their brother was not interested.
