Lesson Objectives To understand the different language and presentational devices that are used in non-fiction texts To think about how and why these devices are used To explore how these are used in a non-fiction text

Media and Non-fiction texts (Paper 1) When reading a non-fiction text you need to think about the language and the presentation. Language = What words have been used and why Presentation = What the text looks like

Presentational devices These are features like; a headline, sub-heading, image, logo, different fonts and texts. Look at the ‘This is Billy’ leaflet and annotate (make notes/label) the presentational devices used in the leaflet. Also, try to comment on the effect that the device is supposed to have (why it has been used). Language devices These are features like; emotive language, repetition, use of facts and opinions, direct address. Look at the ‘This is Billy’ leaflet and annotate (make/notes) the language devices used in the leaflet. Also, try to comment on the effect that the device is supposed to have (why it has been used)

Try to answer the following questions (aim to write approximately half a side for each one) 1.Explain how presentational devices are used in the leaflet. Comment on the effect they are supposed to have on the reader and whether they are effective or not. 2.Explain how language devices are used in the leaflet. Comment on the effect they are supposed to have on the reader and whether they are effective or not.

Lesson Objectives To recap what you need to think about when reading a media and non-fiction text for Section A of Paper 1 To explore some of the techniques required to answer an exam question effectively To use the ‘This is Billy’ text and answer exam style questions Extension: To attempt a past GCSE Paper 1

Exam Techniques for Paper 1 Section A Restate the question – If the question says “Explain how the language devices are persuasive…” then you could start the answer “The language devices are persuasive in a number of ways.” Use quotations from the text to support your answer – these must be short and use quotation marks Make sure you answer the question – look for a key word or phrase in the question and repeat this in your answer Use connectives (Also, Furthermore, Moreover, In addition to, Secondly) to link your writing when making several points – this shows the examiner that you are making different points Make sure your writing is clear and makes sense – check it carefully by proofreading Write in a detail – the more points you make the more chance you’ve got of getting the available marks

TASK: Write the title ‘Top Tips for Paper 1 Section A’ and write down in your own words the six tips discussed on the previous slide Try to answer the following questions (aim to write approximately half a side for each one) as if they are exam questions.
